3. Slant Magazine's 100 Essential Films's icon

    Slant Magazine's 100 Essential Films

Favs/dislikes: 39:0. While you will find many popular classics and critical favorites on our list of 100 Essential Films, our goal was to mix things up a bit. This list should not be construed as a definitive "greatest films" package, but as an alternative compiled by a group of kinky film-lovers wanting to give serious critical thought to neglected, forgotten and misunderstood gems. We aimed for the kind of list where post-Cahiers Orson Welles could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a pre-pastiche Brian De Palma; where it's understood that Hitchcock, Dreyer, Ford and Ozu created masterpieces besides film-school staples like Vertigo, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Searchers, and Tokyo Story; and where the postmodern irony of Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life is allowed space next to its modern-day equivalent: Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls (gasp!). Because space was tight, documentaries, shorts and animated films were not eligible. Additionally, we limited directors to no more than one spot on the list

  6. Time Out's The 101 Best Action Movies Ever Made's icon

Time Out's The 101 Best Action Movies Ever Made

Favs/dislikes: 39:0. "They get a bad rap from snobs, but don’t mess with action movies—they’re pumped up, loaded with ammo and in your face like Arnold Schwarzenegger on a bad day. Truth be told, no one can live solely on Woody Allen movies or animation alone. We need explosions periodically. Big ones. Preferably accompanied by catchphrases and squealing electric guitars. With crucial contributions from Hong Kong and France, the genre has a global richness that sneaks up on you like a swarthy henchman with a knife clenched between his teeth. And when we arrived at action’s ’80s movies heyday, when Hollywood stars ruled the roost, our research was euphoric. We’ve polled over 50 experts in the field, from essential directors like Die Hard’s John McTiernan to the actual folks in the line of fire, such as Machete himself, Danny Trejo. Critics and experts have weighed in, too." The list has 102 titles because Kill Bill was counted as one entry. List was last updated August 14 2020 Modnote about list order: When Timeout changed the web formatting of the list from its previous pagination the ordering of each group of 10 got reversed. The list here is in it's original correct ordering. Source

  8. British Film Noir Guide (369 Films 1937-1964)'s icon

British Film Noir Guide (369 Films 1937-1964)

Favs/dislikes: 38:0. "This work presents 369 British films produced between 1937 and 1964 that embody many of the same filmic qualities as those "black films" made in the United States during the classic film noir era. This reference work makes a case for the inclusion of the British films in the film noir canon, which is still considered by some to be an exclusively American inventory. The following information is presented: a quotation from the film; title and release date; a one- to five-star rating; production company, director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and main performers; and a plot synopsis with commentary. Appendices categorize films by rating, release date, director and cinematographer and also provide a noir and non-noir breakdown of the 47 films presented on the Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre, a 1960 British television series." NOTE: I created this list in May 2012 and had to add well over 75 titles to iCM, suggesting that there are many obscurities worth checking out. Keaney included 26 of the 47 Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre "films" into this work that he considered to be film noirs or at the very least marginal noirs. The remaining 21 "films" were not included. Keaney's ratings: #1-4: ★★★★★ #5-15: ★★★★½ #16-42: ★★★★ #43-85: ★★★½ #86-150: ★★★ #151-234: ★★½ #235-312: ★★ #313-339: ★½ #340-341: ★ #342-369: "Not reviewed" (since they were not available at the time of writing). Michael F. Keaney is a fan of classic movies and the author of "Film Noir Guide". ISBN: 978-0-7864-6427-2

  17. Paste's The 100 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time's icon

Paste's The 100 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 38:5. As a genre, the romantic comedy has had pretty sharply defined highs (the 1940s and 1980s) and lows (1990s-2000s) based on viewer appetite and studio competence, but thanks to this thing we call “the human condition,” hope-laden fables showing how two people can, indeed, find and cherish one another despite all obstacles will never stay out of fashion long—no matter how soulless and cynical the industry. Whether because we are young and naïve, not-so-young and searching, or old and grumpy with a soft spot (or wistful memory), there’s always an appetite for fascinating meet-cutes, resolved comedies of errors and melted gruff exteriors. So no matter your particular poison when it comes to scripted takes on love and relationships, let Paste’s list of the 100 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time provide you just what the doctor ordered. List published April 2013. Updated and expanded in October 2018, updated Feb 2022. Source
