The beserk organ that opens both Van Morrisson's song 'T.B Sheets' and this movie is the perfect off-beat that guides this profound, crazed, hypnotic film. I mean, there's a few underrated Scorsese pictures, but this one takes the cake...did people even see this? Cage mesmerizes in that signature drowsy-yet-psyched-up way and his rapport with all his co-actors is magic, it's some of his best work. The whole film basks in a demented glow that represents the absolute pinnacle of Richardson's abilities aswell. This film is fucking pulsating, vibrating, pounding, brimming, teeming with genius and life. 7 years ago -

Very unpopular opinion: This is probably my favorite of all the Scorsese movies.
It's something completely different - showing a twilight/neon world, full of 3/4 insane people trying to get by. It's rough around the edges, sure but interesting all the way through.
Before anyone says Goodfellas ... yeah ... that's in comparison a bland, designed product. There I am aware the entire time that I'm watching actors being intentionally tough and cool, putting on the italian-american mobster sideshow. Nic Cage I believe to be genuinely insane. 2 years 3 months ago
