I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, the melancholy and imagination at certain points are wholly attractive. On the other hand, this is a decidedly dystopian film, and while that's perfectly fine, there's an underlying cynicism I find off-putting. The film was a good commentary on how difficult it is being a nine-year-old boy, and it did a good job of carrying that angst into a wonderfully peculiar fantasy setting. But when all was said and done, I came away thinking that even in the boy's dreams and games he could find little enduring childhood contentment. That's a bit of a dangerous message to send to kids if you ask me....and a bit aloof from the wonder of the original book.
This movie was excellent so much depth to it. I laugh at people who think the book was better , the book was nothing more than a shallow children's story.
I would also second the motion of calling this movie boring. It could be nothing worst than looking at watch and waiting for the movie to get over. The set and direction is quite decent but the movie is very slow.
The movie was nothing more than ok.. worse at some points. The book however is amazing! Sadly Spike Jonez changed some of the best moments in the book, and it all ended up as crap. The boy was probably the worst caracter in the whole film. Not Max from the book at all.

I agree that this film was just ok. Some people might think that it was really memorible but I found it boring
I agree with Jos van den Atmos. Its definitely not a childs movie.
Yuck. Max was one fucking annoying kid, screaming and yelling.. Did not remember him that way.
Really? I thought it was one of the best childrens book adaptations in years, bit like "arthouse for children".

Movie's not about story, it's about the feeling and (your own) childhood.
