This film was remade with a Hollywood cast a couple of years ago. Although I haven't seen that version yet I can't believe that Portman, Gyllenhaal and Maguire do a better job than this original Danish cast, who are all absolutely first rate. Connie Nielsen (one of the most beautiful actresses in my eyes) is stunning here in more ways than one in her first Danish role, and the shifting characteristics of Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas as the chalk and cheese brothers are subtle and devastating. Shout out for the young actress playing Natalia, the eldest of the two daughters - she's wonderful as well. It's a properly multi-faceted drama - with compelling, believable characters put in a harsh and harrowing situation. It often has the scope to fall into cliches with high emotions of bereavement, guilt, denial and recovery but Bier never takes the easy way and as a result feels all the realer. A great film. 11 years 7 months ago
