   One of the hardest to watch films I've seen. The scenes of mutilation are so intense, the sound design disgusting. The scene where the main character behaves very erratically at a business dinner had me screaming at the screen, it reached the funny point where cringe and second-hand embarrassment meet abject horror.
   
   All this horror effectively supports subtext that resonate though. The themes around body image are pretty apparent, but I see Esther's manic struggle more as it relates to addiction. Not just the self-destructive physical nature of some addictions, but how one hides it from friends and family. How when Esther's friend is upset about her behavior, Esther returns it with spite, further damaging her relationships to those around her as well as her body.
   
   Side note: This film deserves a good transfer, I look forward to one of the wonderful companies doing that work to give this a great restoration for High Definition. 5 months 4 weeks ago

   One of my absolute favorite horror films ever, if not my all time favorite. Definite trigger warning for self harm, but the film isn't actually all that visually graphic, a lot of it is the tension of what you know is happening but don't see. And as a survivor of self harm I personally feel like this movie is a pretty thoughtful commentary on the subject; it's one of the most interesting, creative, and meaningful horror movies I've seen. 9 years 11 months ago
