I can't believe nobody has commented on this movie yet - it's become one of my favorites since I first caught a glimpse of it on TV some months ago and now I finally saw the whole thing.
It's about Claudia (Holly Hunter) who is experiencing a really bad day and on top of everything has to attend the dreaded Thanksgiving family reunion. We witness her fight her way through lots and lots of conversations and encounters, some funny, some painful and trying... only supported by her beloved gay baby brother Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.).
Jodie Foster (normally a superb actress and in this case a fabulous director) really did a great job capturing the dynamics within a dysfunctional, yet perfectly normal family in a bittersweet, sometimes very funny way. The cast is wonderful even down to the very small roles and it's easy for the audience to relate to it (what family does not have a slightly crazy aunt, or a stuck-up, perfect sister, or a meddling mother...) but also to find someone to identify with.
For me the best performances were those of Holly Hunter who is the anchor and the person who made me laugh and suffer with her... and most of all of Robert Downey Jr. who just shines in his portrayal of the brother who is loud, energetic, funny and - to some - irritating beyond believe, which is probably just his way of dealing with the world and keeping its pain at a safe distance... wonderful. The support and love between his and Holly Hunter's character were so heartfelt and beautiful that this alone made the movie worth watching.
Definately a movie to watch more than once to get all the subtle nuances and little remarks. 9 years 8 months ago
