Julie Taymor's Titus (Andronicus) was a sterile art house film I liked, but did not love, but her version of The Tempest is simply gorgeous. Obviously, the play itself has something to do with, Shakespeare's retirement play necessarily better than an early effort like T.A. But more than that, this film has wonderful locations, painterly effects that are far less digital than you would imagine, and some incredible performances, most prominently by Helen Mirren as Prospera. You read that right, Taymor switches genders on Propsero, and makes her relationship with Miranda a motherly one that works very well for the play. It's so good, I think a male Prospero in some other staging would seem bizarre to me now. I won't call it perfect - the young singer who plays Ferdinand is a bit of a mumbler, for example - but my complaints are very slim. 8 years 10 months ago

Pretty uncomfortable to watch. When you read the script, you can fill the hiatus left for your other senses with the color and music of Shakespeare's speech; when you watch a play, the tones given to every line and the overdoing of gestures can fill the other hiatus now left by the absense of a living background, both visual and audible. In all these senses, film is a superior art form. This particular film however is lazy, it just takes the play and adds this by now classic abuse of CGI to it. It is hollow; you simply can't get the vivdness of Shakespeare by watching it, you just want it to end as quickly as possible, exactly like when you have to read a book for a assignment. Lacks music, lacks something to enertain one's eyes; if it weren't for Russell Brand, it would also lack acting. It is badly fabricated. I know, yea, 300 was a cool movie, but that one has in fact not just action, but it also deals with more obscure times, which allow as well more obscure sorroundings.

    God, it was bad.
