First off, to Erik and his team: thank you. You have built a wonderful site for movie fans that will only get better with the new features.
And, need I remind everyone, they do it without ANY ads, a big plus nowadays.
Now, as for all the people that think there should be restrictions on what movies are added and/or the personal lists that are created: chill out.
If I or anyone else wants to make a personal list of Bugs Bunny cartoons, Oscar nominated shorts, the "Police Academy" movies or even the cinematic oeuvre of Francis the Talking Mule, then I or anyone else should be able to do so. The point of a personal list is that it is PERSONAL, and with the new features, everyone will be able to use this site in the way the want to, free of arbitrary restrictions.
And if you don't like a particular list or think that it will affect your own personal ranking, then be sure to re-read the last two paragraphs of the above blog post:
"The personal top lists are also an optional feature, if you do not want to they will not be shown.
And yes, the number of checked movies will only take into account those movies that belong to one or more top lists, just like it is now. The competitive aspect of the website is thus left unchanged."
Also, as this is only the first in a series of preview posts regarding iCM 2.0, any speculation on how the new user-created personal lists is just that: speculation. Let's wait and see what Erik and company have in store for us, they've done a great job so far.
rick: I say they should keep the current set up, but then have a separate list for ALL movies. That way the Top List awards etc arent bothered by it.
What about making our own lists too. Like "My Fav 80s Films" etc? That would be neat to be able to do. Thats why bringing in all films is a cool idea to me.

We already have Academy Award Best Foreign Pictures and Academy Award Best Pictures, so what would be wrong with that?
As I figured out that nobody read my comment on the IMDB bufgix blog post, I repeat it here:
Just a quick note:
It would be easier for you if you let the user just add the list number and build the URL on your own, like that:
http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=[number]&a=1&g=All+genres
a=1 displays all titles automatically and
g=All+genres display all genres automatically
Love the idea of being able to add films but with a couple of reservations. I also use another film site, Four Word Film Reviews and they introduced a similar feature. The problem here is that users who add films are credited with their addtion to the site. This means that users who want to have added more films than anyone else add any crap just to get their 'score' up. So no credit for anyone adding films or lists of films please. Following on from this, a lot of what I would consider non-films get added. Bugs Bunny cartoons, TV series, obscure Mongolian dramas and of course Porn. If there's one thing we don't need it's Star Whores. ( I made that one up, but you know, it probably exists). Not sure how easily you'll be able to filter these, but just be aware. Good luck guys
Don't be sad Erik, I think the only people who are negative about it, don't really understand how this is going to affect the site. In my opinion, it can only be a positive influence.
We love the idea about adopting user-created lists, that is exactly what we're going for. Thanks for the positive comments guys, I felt a bit sad yesterday!
Yeah, I've submitted a few lists that I would love to see on here, but of course I realize how busy the staff is and that they can't add every list on their own. So with ICM 2.0 we could create these lists, and the ICM staff could "adopt" them into the official lists. I love that!
Maybe, there could be a feature for user-created lists where you could vote either for or against the list being added to the official lists. If a user-created list has received a certain amount of yes votes, it could become eligible for the official lists.
I'll add 1 more vote for Nine99's idea. It would be a great way to get more official lists on the site without the iCM team having to do a huge amount of work.

This sounds good to me. Don't understand the hate. There's already a bunch of bad movies on the top-grossing movie list.PeteGCDB

@n20300: User-lists will have no influence on the charts (or your ranking), so there's nothing to worry about.allisoncm
I think this is a good idea, but you're really not going to charge for additional lists, are you? That would be terrible. :(Kasparius

This has such awesome potential... Especially if Nine99 and tomsalad's ideas are adopted. Like listsofbests.com only better.dif777
