11. American Pulp Fiction Writers's icon

American Pulp Fiction Writers

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. It was inside the pages of "Black Mask" magazine (1920-51) that Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe were born, and this pulp fiction playground went on to greatly influence American cinema. In fact, Tarantino's film "Pulp Fiction" was originally titled "Black Mask". While many writers flourished in this genre, the list below concentrates solely on the works of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and James Cain. I have endeavored to include all films based on their novels or stories, all screenplays, and anything derivative of their work. For instance, Hammett wrote only one "Thin Man" novel, but I have included all six films. While this list is heavy on noir and hard-boiled private eyes, it is not exclusively either. For example, "Black Bird" is here because it's a Sam Spade parody, not because of who wrote it, and 1982's "Hammett" is here because - honestly - what other list would it qualify for?

AniMetacritic V.2: Top 50 Standalone Anime Series

Favs/dislikes: 7:1. In November 2013, Kadian created AniMetacritic V.2, a list of the highest rated anime by 161 reviewers and critics (based on ratings from their MAL profiles). It is an expanded version of Scamp's original AniMetacritic list. This is a list of the top 50 standalone series on AniMetacritic V.2. I am defining "standalone" as any series which is the first (or only) series in its franchise (so sequels and remakes are excluded).

Australian Film Institute (AACTA) Award for Best Film

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. The AACTA Award for Best Film is an award presented by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), a non-profit organisation whose aim is to "to identify, award, promote and celebrate Australia's greatest achievements in film and television". From 1969-1975, the award was presented as a gold, silver, bronze or grand prix prize, or in some years, a cash prize. * The 'Michael' segment of Three to Go was the one given the award in 1970. * The Babadook and The Water Diviner both won the award in 2014.
21. AV Club's The 25 Best Horror Movies Since 2000's icon

AV Club's The 25 Best Horror Movies Since 2000

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. From the intro of the article: "Sixteen contributors submitted ranked ballots of their favorite horror movies released in the United States since the year 2000, including a few that opened internationally before then. These are not the scariest films of our new millennium, but simply the greatest that happen to occupy the horror genre. As such, we tried to be fairly strict with the definition; films that feel like horror but wouldn’t necessarily be classified as such by IMDB or Netflix—like David Lynch’s two post-2000 magnum opuses, or Pan’s Labyrinth, or Requiem For A Dream—were excluded. (The only film that would have made the list had it not been deemed ineligible after ballots came in was Under The Skin—and even then, just barely.) Conversely, we felt little need to inclusively cater to the major horror trends of the period: Just as it’s possible to love ’80s horror without loving a single slasher movie, one can appreciate where the genre has gone these past 15 years without citing the Saw series, defending the endless string of modern Exorcist clones, or apologizing for the ongoing found-footage movement."
22. Bad Cinema Society's "The Worst Films of the 20th Century" 's icon

Bad Cinema Society's "The Worst Films of the 20th Century"

Favs/dislikes: 7:8. The Hastings Bad Cinema Society's Poll of the worst movies of the 20th century (in alphabetical order). Their website is now sadly defunct but the list is present on several list sites on the web, and the original is accessible using the Wayback Machine Archive. The poll's introduction reads: On June 16, 1998, the American Film Institute announced its choices for the 100 greatest films ever made. The group called its list 100 Years, 100 Movies. To no one’s surprise, just about everybody in America disagreed with the titles on the list. Anybody can make a list of great movies. We [The Bad Cinema Society] thought it would be helpful if a group had the guts to put together a list of the all-time worst films. So, about a month after the AFI announcement, the Hastings Bad Cinema Society announced that it too would be making an "end of the century" list, but the 100 movies it planned to "honor" would all be stinkers.

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. All films with at least one vote in the BBC Culture poll used to create their list of "100 Greatest Foreign-Language Films". Not in IMDb: Power (Ade Love, 1981) [Number 10 in Toni Kan's list] Going over the alphabetical list of critics, Luke Buckmaster is the first one whose films had all been mentioned already by someone else.
