Ebbywebby's favorite unofficial checks

Favs/dislikes: 7:2. I'll be adding more titles as time passes. Also subtracting some, based on either waning enthusiasm or a film's debut on an official list. See below to check out the abundant films that I've deleted for the latter reason. In fact, I've had to delete so many films that the remaining ones' dwindling quality has me debating whether this list is still worth sharing. ICM's bloated set of official lists now suggests there are over 17,000 essential, canonical films to see? Silly. I so wish I was more confident about the shorts I've included...I've checked off about 6,400 shorts on ICM and now really regret not taking notes on the best ones. I just don't remember all those blips of film footage well enough. Newly "official" films deleted during 2024: The World According to Garp During 2023: Morgiana, Saute ma Ville, The Sun's Burial, Deerskin, Images, Phase IV, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Mademoiselle, Asparagus During 2022: Jodorowsky's Dune, Mingus - Charlie Mingus 1968, Mandara, Uta, El Empleo, The Hand of God, The Power of the Dog, Johnny Corncob, Why Does Herr R. Entertainment Weekly's Essential Movies Kids Must Experience (Before They Turn 13)

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. There are people out there who have never seen The Princess Bride. They walk among us, holding down jobs, contributing to society, and generally living happy, semi-fulfilled lives. But whisper a perfectly-timed “mawage” in their direction during a wedding, and the resulting blank stare or awkward chuckle will expose an inconceivable pop-cultural blind spot. Someone failed them when they were growing up. In many ways it’s too late for them, but we can still save the next generation. The 55 Essential Movies Kids Must Experience (Before They Turn 13) is a starting point. This isn’t a list of the 55 “best” kids movies, nor a compendium of hidden gems. Rather, it’s a survival-guide syllabus of films that we all need to know to be able to speak the same pop-cultural language, listed in order by when they might be best introduced. It starts with a film that is a perfect introduction to the cinematic universe and ends with one that is an ideal capper before graduating into the world of PG-13 and R movies—and the age when kids begin to make their own theater decisions. These are the cinematic building blocks for future film connoisseurs, movie-literate enthusiasts who can gracefully segue from a George Bailey impression into a spirited debate over whether Han Solo shot first. The important stuff.

FG's top 250 of the 70s

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. This list was compiled through year by year rating polls. The lowest amount of votes needed to be eligible was 5 votes. The point of the exercise was to give more obscure movies an equall oppurtunity to compete. The attendance rate varied between 30 and 70, which is part of the reason some years are more represented than others.
16. Film Comment's Best Films of 2015's icon

Film Comment's Best Films of 2015

Favs/dislikes: 7:1. According to the source: "A note on the poll’s workings: over 100 North American colleagues ranked their favorites in two categories: 1) those that received theatrical runs and 2) those viewed this year but currently with no announced plans for U.S. theatrical distribution. For each ballot, a first-place choice was allotted 20 points, 19 for second, and so on." These are the films in the first category. For the films in the second category, look here. It can go to any film of any technique or genre, and coming from any country, as long as it is a feature-length film. The global results reflect the great cultural and personal variety among the members of FIPRESCI. This list shows the 10 most voted films each year (including ties). 25. Flavorwire's 50 Essential African-American Independent Films's icon

Flavorwire's 50 Essential African-American Independent Films

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. While there are still too few African-American voices being recognized in Hollywood, recent films like Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Spike Lee’s Da Sweet Blood of Jesus speak to a vital tradition of black independent filmmakers. Even controversial creators like Tyler Perry hail from a long line of filmmakers that includes the directors and stars of the “race films” of the 1920s and 1930s. Many pioneering African-American directors, like Melvin Van Peebles and Julie Dash, were trailblazers who found money for their fiercely idiosyncratic visions. They defied expectations and proved that there was an audience for films about black characters as told by black artists.
