12. Viennale's icon

Viennale

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. All Feature Films shown at the Vienna International Film Festival since 1996. From the Homepage: The Viennale is Austria’s most important international film event, as well as one of the oldest and best-known festivals in the German-speaking world. Every October, the Viennale takes place in beautiful cinemas in Vienna’s historic center, providing the festival with an international orientation and a distinctive urban flair. A high percentage of the more than 96,000 visitors to the festival from Austria and abroad is made up of a decidedly young audience. In its main program, the Viennale shows a carefully picked selection of new films from all over the globe as well as from Austria, some of them international premieres. The choice of about 300 films offers a cross-section of bold film-making which stands apart from the aesthetics of mainstream conventionality and is politically relevant. Aside from its focus on the newest feature films of every genre and structural form imaginable, the festival gives particular attention to documentary films, international short films, as well as experimental works and crossover films. Documentaries, Short Films, Retrospectives, Tributes and Special Programs are not included in this list.

Yahoo.com's 100 Movies To See Before You Die: The All Time Greats

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. The list represents what the staff at Yahoo! Movies feels represents the 100 essential films to see before you die. "To choose the titles for the list, we considered factors like historical importance and cultural impact. But we also selected films that we believe are the most thrilling, most dramatic, scariest, and funniest movies of all time. Some of these films you've seen, and some you may not have heard of, but we believe that each one is a timeless classic that you absolutely have to see." -- Yahoo! Movies Staff
22. Yahoo's 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die's icon

Yahoo's 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. "It’s one thing to make a list of movies that are essential. But it’s something else to make a list of movies that are funny. So after some heated debates, a shouting match or two and at least one pie fight, the staff at Yahoo! Movies presents this list of the "100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die.” We didn’t necessarily choose the “best” comedies out there but those we see as the funniest. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” for instance, might technically be a comedy although it’s seriously lacking in yuks. Meanwhile “Pulp Fiction” – which is on the list -- might not seem like an obvious choice, but provides more belly laughs in it than anything Kevin James has ever done. Anyway, some of these movies you might have seen, others you might not have heard of, but all of them are pretty darned funny."
23. Yahoo's Top 100 Movies to See Before You Die's icon

Yahoo's Top 100 Movies to See Before You Die

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. Many movies are good, some are great, but only a select few can be called truly "essential." After heated discussions, long negotiations, and a shouting match or two, the staff at Yahoo! Movies has put together this list of the 100 films you must see before you die. To choose the titles for the list, we considered factors like historical importance and cultural impact. But we also selected films that we believe are the most thrilling, most dramatic, scariest, and funniest movies of all time. Some of these films you've seen, and some you may not have heard of, but we believe that each one is a timeless classic that you absolutely have to see.

25. 100 Essential New Zealand Films's icon

100 Essential New Zealand Films

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Book by Hamish McDouall Published October 2009 This is a collection of 100 films - features, documentaries and shorts. As such, it is a subjective list of "essential" titles and since limited to 100, some of your favourites will be missing. Given that, it contains some very helpful summaries and reviews of films you should experience. The author states that he "make(s) no apologies for not including ... 'Footrot Flats', but does not explain why. If you meet him, will you ask him and let me know. That aside, perhaps this book is covering too much ground and would have been better off limiting its coverage to feature films, even if that included feature documentaries. Given the number of New Zealand short films, that group should have its own book. An excellent index has been included, but more viewing, rental and purchase sources are needed. With the shortage of reviews for many of these titles, the major contribution of Mr. McDouall's book is his commentaries on the films. They will assist in helping you learn about some New Zealand film gems and just might give you that push to see something you have yet to experience. Do yourself a favour and start by giving this a read. Films are listed in alphabetical order. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is counted as a single entry.
