  3. 20 Movies With The Most Brilliant Sound Design's icon

20 Movies With The Most Brilliant Sound Design

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. The world of cinema interest is ruled initially by actors, and secondly by directors. They always overshadow the other technical works in cinema, but for somebody getting into film, aspects like cinematography or editing are just as important to them. However, the role of the sound designer and the importance of sound design are relegated to a secondary position, ignoring how essential they are in building a film. The mixing stage is the process capable of providing tension in any thriller, and the Foley recording is the process capable of inventing sounds for a film. One of the reasons the sound design is discreet is the tradition of making it “invisible”. A classical film would tell us that a good sound design is the one an audience is unable to perceive. But with these 20 examples, we can see that sound design can be a creative and powerful tool capable of filling a film with different emotions, or even changing the speech behind the film.

  6. 30 Great Exploitation Films You Probably Haven’t Seen (Taste of Cinema)'s icon

30 Great Exploitation Films You Probably Haven’t Seen (Taste of Cinema)

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. All movies are exploitation movies, if you really think about it. Each one seeks to elicit interest from viewers, attempts to exploit something in them that will cause them to take time out of their busy schedules and consume whatever visual story has been conceived by the filmmakers. However, generally when people call something an “exploitation movie”, the implication is that the producers are cynically trying to entice audiences with the promise of sex, blood, and sheer tastelessness. Such assumptions aren’t entirely groundless, and more than one movie mogul (Roger Corman, for example, who appears on the following list no fewer than three times) has made a living playing to the public’s baser instincts. But that doesn’t mean that the final product can’t be a blast to watch, or can’t be as respectable, in it’s own way, as any A-list picture. At the very least, many exploitation films, whether objectively good or bad, provide a kind of entertainment that is direct, unvarnished, and specifically calculated to please. The list you are about to read gives a rough outline of exploitation movies that might be lesser-known in many cases, but are no less worth the investment of time it takes to watch them for people who like their fun visceral and uncompromising. 24. Anna Biller’s 75 Classic Hollywood Funnywomen's icon

Anna Biller’s 75 Classic Hollywood Funnywomen

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. A note from Anna, April 2020: Here is my list of 75 of the films with the best female characters in classic Hollywood comedies from the 1930s–1960s. There are many more fantastic comedies I could have included, (and I’m sure I will kick myself for the ones I forgot), but I tried to give a sampling of the work of the great comedy actresses here. I personally find it good for my mental health to see great actresses on the screen showing off their formidable talents in uplifting, well-written films. These characters are admirable, clever, resourceful, and human. And from Shirley Temple to Barbara Stanwyck to Margaret Rutherford, they are dressed, made-up, and coiffed by the greatest designers, lit by the greatest cinematographers, scripted by the best writers, directed by the greatest directors, and playing against the greatest leading men. These movies are a testament to the indomitable spirit of women everywhere, and they speak to us especially strongly today, when there is such a paucity of great female characters in movies. Anna Biller’s movies include feature films The Love Witch and Viva.
