Yahoo's 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. "It’s one thing to make a list of movies that are essential. But it’s something else to make a list of movies that are funny. So after some heated debates, a shouting match or two and at least one pie fight, the staff at Yahoo! Movies presents this list of the "100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die.” We didn’t necessarily choose the “best” comedies out there but those we see as the funniest. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” for instance, might technically be a comedy although it’s seriously lacking in yuks. Meanwhile “Pulp Fiction” – which is on the list -- might not seem like an obvious choice, but provides more belly laughs in it than anything Kevin James has ever done. Anyway, some of these movies you might have seen, others you might not have heard of, but all of them are pretty darned funny."
2. Yahoo's Top 100 Movies to See Before You Die's icon

Yahoo's Top 100 Movies to See Before You Die

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. Many movies are good, some are great, but only a select few can be called truly "essential." After heated discussions, long negotiations, and a shouting match or two, the staff at Yahoo! Movies has put together this list of the 100 films you must see before you die. To choose the titles for the list, we considered factors like historical importance and cultural impact. But we also selected films that we believe are the most thrilling, most dramatic, scariest, and funniest movies of all time. Some of these films you've seen, and some you may not have heard of, but we believe that each one is a timeless classic that you absolutely have to see.

4. 100 Essential New Zealand Films's icon

100 Essential New Zealand Films

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Book by Hamish McDouall Published October 2009 This is a collection of 100 films - features, documentaries and shorts. As such, it is a subjective list of "essential" titles and since limited to 100, some of your favourites will be missing. Given that, it contains some very helpful summaries and reviews of films you should experience. The author states that he "make(s) no apologies for not including ... 'Footrot Flats', but does not explain why. If you meet him, will you ask him and let me know. That aside, perhaps this book is covering too much ground and would have been better off limiting its coverage to feature films, even if that included feature documentaries. Given the number of New Zealand short films, that group should have its own book. An excellent index has been included, but more viewing, rental and purchase sources are needed. With the shortage of reviews for many of these titles, the major contribution of Mr. McDouall's book is his commentaries on the films. They will assist in helping you learn about some New Zealand film gems and just might give you that push to see something you have yet to experience. Do yourself a favour and start by giving this a read. Films are listed in alphabetical order. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is counted as a single entry. 7. 20 Movies With The Most Brilliant Sound Design's icon

20 Movies With The Most Brilliant Sound Design

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. The world of cinema interest is ruled initially by actors, and secondly by directors. They always overshadow the other technical works in cinema, but for somebody getting into film, aspects like cinematography or editing are just as important to them. However, the role of the sound designer and the importance of sound design are relegated to a secondary position, ignoring how essential they are in building a film. The mixing stage is the process capable of providing tension in any thriller, and the Foley recording is the process capable of inventing sounds for a film. One of the reasons the sound design is discreet is the tradition of making it “invisible”. A classical film would tell us that a good sound design is the one an audience is unable to perceive. But with these 20 examples, we can see that sound design can be a creative and powerful tool capable of filling a film with different emotions, or even changing the speech behind the film.

10. 30 Great Exploitation Films You Probably Haven’t Seen (Taste of Cinema)'s icon

30 Great Exploitation Films You Probably Haven’t Seen (Taste of Cinema)

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. All movies are exploitation movies, if you really think about it. Each one seeks to elicit interest from viewers, attempts to exploit something in them that will cause them to take time out of their busy schedules and consume whatever visual story has been conceived by the filmmakers. However, generally when people call something an “exploitation movie”, the implication is that the producers are cynically trying to entice audiences with the promise of sex, blood, and sheer tastelessness. Such assumptions aren’t entirely groundless, and more than one movie mogul (Roger Corman, for example, who appears on the following list no fewer than three times) has made a living playing to the public’s baser instincts. But that doesn’t mean that the final product can’t be a blast to watch, or can’t be as respectable, in it’s own way, as any A-list picture. At the very least, many exploitation films, whether objectively good or bad, provide a kind of entertainment that is direct, unvarnished, and specifically calculated to please. The list you are about to read gives a rough outline of exploitation movies that might be lesser-known in many cases, but are no less worth the investment of time it takes to watch them for people who like their fun visceral and uncompromising.
