  4. James A. FitzPatrick Traveltalks's icon

    James A. FitzPatrick Traveltalks

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. James A. FitzPatrick's condescending journey around the world . Although quite hokey and often terribly racist ("Those natives have no understanding of a higher power," Australia is a "White Man's Paradise"), these shorts provide priceless glimpses of a world long past (especially his Pre-WWII films). It is amazing to see the rapid modernization that has taken place within such a short span of the 20th century. Although he constantly hammers in the superiority of the USA, FitzPatrick is always reluctant to leave his destination - and often it isn't hard to see why!

  22. Jonathan Pryce filmography's icon

    Jonathan Pryce filmography

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Jonathan Pryce gained fame as Sam Lowry in Terry Gilliam's brilliant dystopia 'Brazil' (1985) - shy and nervous man who nevertheless gains the courage to pursue the woman of his dreams and to fight agains nigthmarish bureaucratic state he lives in. After 'Brazil', however, Pryce was mostly seen as a villain by Hollywood directors and even by Gilliam himself who cast Pryce in 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' (1988) and 'The Brothers Grimm' (2005) - both times as an antagonist. Pryce also gave interesting performances in such movies as 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' (1983), 'Glengarry Glen Ross' (1992), 'Carrington' (1995) and others.
  23. Jonathan Rosenbaum's 50 Favorite Films of the 21st Century so far's icon

Jonathan Rosenbaum's 50 Favorite Films of the 21st Century so far

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. "A surprising consequence of my posting “My 25 Favorite Films of the 2000s (so far)” on this site on June 21 was that visits to my site suddenly quadrupled, going from about a thousand per day to well over 4,000. This was encouraging — and for me a good response to Robert Koehler’s charge that such list-making was pointless (because the need for viewing suggestions in a context where there are too many choices strikes me — and apparently many others — as self-evident). Yet the haste with which I put together my original list also led to some subsequent second thoughts and demurrals. So with this in mind, I’ve come up with a new list of 50 instead of 25, substituting one title in the original list after my friend Janet Bergstrom persuaded me that Chantal Akerman’s From the Other Side was a much worthier example of Akerman’s work than Down There (which I’d listed partially as a provocation, without a sufficient amount of reflection). As with my original list of titles, I’ve stuck to the same rule of including only one film by each filmmaker, and the order is alphabetical. And again, with very few exceptions (e.g., The Clock, Uncle Boonmee), commentaries on these films (of varying lengths) can be found on this site, accessible via the search engine. Afterthought: The most glaring omission/oversight in my list of fifty titles is Travis Wilkerson’s Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun?" Wilkerson's film has been included at the bottom of the list. The article was published on Rosenbaum's site on October 17, 2019, though it appears to have been compiled earlier (the article is dated 7/11/17)
