Harvard's Suggested Film Viewing: Narrative Films

Favs/dislikes: 285:4. This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria. The list is divided into 5 sections: I. Favs/dislikes: 23:0. In 1995, for the century of the cinema's commemoration, Télérama, a French magazine, published a special issue « Les Meilleurs films du siècle - Cent ans de cinéma ». The purpose of the magazine was to provide a tour of the history of cinema, decade by decade, mentioning significant international and French films and making for each decade a top of best films. This list takes into consideration only the French films in the following way: - The 81 French films in the decade top tens, commencing with the silent era (10 films), the 30's (10 films), until the 90's with only 5 films. (there's 5 entries for Fantômas; 3 entries for the Pagnol's trilogy Marius-Fanny-César; and 1 entry for Smoking-No-Smoking) - Starting from the 82th entry, the list is alphabetical and report all the French films mentioned in the magazine, including the films quoted in the text, but also the films selected for a thematic section. Hence, for each decade the magazine picked one or several French films on the following issues: "the twosome of the decade", "the beautiful love", "the beautiful death", "the scandal", "the unfair flop", "the hit", "the best set", "the line", "the tune", "the spirit of the times", and the "fashion". 18. Masters of cinema on Blu Ray's icon

Masters of cinema on Blu Ray

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. This list is the little brother of the official list https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/masters+of+cinema/ and only features the releases of the masters of cinema/eureka label on blu ray. From the Masters of cinema website: "Blu-ray is the most immersive and faithful representation of "the cinema experience" currently available in the home today (outside of a costly 35mm projector). Unfortunately, the industry has poorly explained and demonstrated the technology, sowing confusion and giving the impression that Blu-ray is not enough of a worthwhile upgrade from DVD. When compared with an actual 35mm frame, the DVD format — now well into its second decade as the world's favourite film-holding receptacle — is akin to a Polaroid of an oil painting. Watchable, but capable of being far surpassed. Blu-ray is the first home format to adequately represent the depth and texture of celluloid — and in a Blu-ray marketplace overflowing with mainstream tat, we aim to offer a nourishing alternative. Consequently, we heartily recommend upgrading to a multi-region Blu-ray player. We released our first Blu-ray in November 2008 and the format is currently our main focus." The list is ranked according to the blu-ray spine numbers given by masters of cinema, but because some numbers contain more than one title, the numbering is different.

    Criterion Collection Stand-Alone Extras

Favs/dislikes: 27:0. Films included on Criterion collection titles in addition to the main feature. These are both long and short films, however the only requirement is that they are not a traditional 'extra' about the film, like a making of film or an interview. They are instead an additional film, often by that director, that could easily stand alone (if a full feature) or in a compilation (if a short film). Note: this does not include individual episodes of portmanteau films
