Festival de Valdivia's Best Latin American Films from 1993 to 2013

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. In 2013, to celebrate 20 years of Chile's most important festival, programmers from other festivals from the region were asked to vote for the essential Latin American films of the period 1993-2013 to be screened at the festival. Resulting in the following list. Note that there was a restriction on the number of films from each country they could vote for, which made some acclaimed films from countries with very few film productions to stand higher in the final ranking (Hamaca Paraguaya from Paraguay, and Whisky from Uruguay for instance). This doesn't take away anything from these great films though.

  18. Festival du film maudit 1949/1950's icon

    Festival du film maudit 1949/1950

Favs/dislikes: 8:0. The term film maudit – literally, “cursed film”– was coined for the legendary 1949 Festival du Film Maudit in Biarritz for which a jury lead by Jean Cocteau curated and celebrated a group of films criminally overlooked and neglected at the time – a lineup that included such now-canonical pictures as L’Atalante (1934), The Long Voyage Home (1940) and Les Dames du Bois de Bologne (1945). A polemical landmark in the history of postwar French film culture, Cocteau’s festival also designated as films maudit a number of deliberately shocking, outré and bold films, such as Fireworks (1947) and The Shanghai Gesture (1941). From caboosobooks.net: caboose is pleased to make available the extremely rare 43-page catalogue for the 1949 Festival du film maudit in Biarritz, France, organised by Jean Cocteau, André Bazin, Roger Leenhardt and others with writings, artwork and photographs by a who’s who of the most celebrated, overlooked and ‘accursed’ artists, filmmakers and writers of the day. Our copy is even signed by Jean Cocteau! caboose is planning a translated edition of the catalogue with commentary, but in the meantime you can view free of charge the original French edition, an extreme rarity that many film buffs and historians have never laid eyes on. The films shown in the festival are not listed in the catalogue, so we are listing them here (to the best of our knowledge—corrections welcome), in chronological order of production. Thanks to Colin Crisp for helping establish the list. Following the list of films from the first festival in 1949 is a list of films from the second and final Festival du film maudit in 1950, in the order they were screened. This, we believe, is a definitive list. missing from the list: unknown films listed under “Short Russian Films” and selection of “Pete Smith Specialties” (U.S.A., 1940s)
  19. Festival Filem Malaysia - Best Film's icon

Festival Filem Malaysia - Best Film

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. The Award for Best Film at the Malaysia Film Festival. From Wikipedia: The first awards were presented on 13 April 1980, at the Nirwana Ballroom, Hilton Hotels as a closing ceremony for the first festival ever in which the opening ceremony on 11 April, was being opened officially by the then Minister of Information, Tan Sri Mohammad Rahmat at the Federal Cinema of Kuala Lumpur. During this first awards and festival ceremony, only sixteen films were competing and awards were divided into three categories which are Heavy Drama (HD), Light Drama (LD) and Comedy (K). At the time of the hosting of the third ceremony, FFM was no longer being organised by Entertainment Journalists Association of Malaysia, but instead taken over by Malaysia National Film Development (FINAS) after the second organisation of the awards ceremony. FINAS stood alone in organising the next three ceremonies notably starting from 1982 up to 1984. In the beginning of the FFM6, the ceremony was once again taken over by a different organiser, this time by the Federation of Film Artistes’ Association of Malaysia (GAFIM) after its establishment with the collaboration of FINAS. There were ties at the 10th and 28th ceremonies, and no award given at the 8th ceremony.
