Paul Verhoeven filmography
Favs/dislikes: 27:0. Paul Verhoeven (born July 18, 1938) is a Dutch film director, screenwriter, and producer who has made movies in both the Netherlands and the United States. Explicitly violent and/or sexual content and social satire are trademarks of both his drama and science fiction films. He is best known for directing the American feature films RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), Starship Troopers (1997), and Hollow Man (2000). Turkish Delight (1973) received the award for Best Dutch Film of the Century at the Netherlands Film Festival.[1] His films altogether received a total of nine Academy Award nominations, mainly for editing and effects. Both RoboCop and Total Recall won an Academy Special Achievement Award. In contrast, his film Showgirls (1995) was poorly received and won seven Golden Raspberry Awards, but has become a cult film over time. -
Pixar Directors Recommend: Films for Kids Under 13
Favs/dislikes: 27:0. "You’re stuck inside, saving the world. So we asked a group of award-winning Pixar filmmakers to help self-isolating families plan the very best movie nights (and days, and nights, and days…). We asked a group of the renowned studio’s directors and story artists—the people behind WALL·E, Finding Nemo, Inside Out, Bao, La Luna, The Good Dinosaur, Purl, Cars 3, Toy Story 4 and more—to show up in your hour of need, and show up they have, with personal recommendations that we’ve split into three Letterboxd lists: All Ages, 7 to 12 Years and 12 Years and Over. From two-minute shorts to the entire Harry Potter collection, there’s something for every viewing window. From Charlie Chaplin to Greta Gerwig, the films cover a century of cinema; and from slapstick to horror, a multitude of genres. Our filmmakers were remarkably restrained, nominating more Studio Ghibli films than Pixar movies, though they collectively agreed that Toy Story should most definitely be there. So we’ll say it for them: please explore all the films of our contributing filmmakers: Angus MacLane, Domee Shi, Kristen Lester, Daniel Chong, Peter Sohn, Valerie LaPointe, Brian Fee, Enrico Casarosa and Andrew Stanton. Thanks, you wonderful people." This list combines the first two lists that Letterboxd created with the Pixar directors, to present a selection of films suitable to watch with children under the age of 13. Some film series explicitly include all films in the series, even though only the first film is included in the Letterboxd lists (see their notes for more information): Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter. Frank Darabont's Greatest Movies of All Time
Favs/dislikes: 26:2. The Empire Magazine asked Frank Darabont to write about his one movie masterpiece. Instead he chose 224. Two remarks about his selection: 1. What follows is not to be confused with a 'best' list. I hate 'best' lists. They are compiled by arrogant fools for the satisfaction of provoking other arrogant fools into spewing angry rebuttals, and before you know it everybody's all puffed-up and dancing around like mountain apes. Stop it, really. Just because I have my favorites, it doesn't mean I think yours suck. I offer my list as highly subjective opinion, not empirically provable fact. If you disagree with it, don't freak out. Instead, be constructive and send me your list so I can fill some of the gaps in my film education. 2. Films are not listed in order of preference, and my genre headings are loose definitions at best. Yes, I'm painfully aware that The Godfather could just as well be listed under 'drama' as 'gangster film'. Yes, Rollerball might be deemed 'science-fiction' rather than 'sports'. Whatever your opinion on these matters, you're absolutely right." 10 movies are selected for each genre, with some exceptions. Order of genres in the list: Drama Science Fiction Comedy War Western Horror Film Noir Thriller Epic/Adventure (11) Costume Drama Crime Music/Musical Sports Action Prison Biographical Silent Era Fantasy (12 movies) Animated Gangsters (11 movies) Socio-Political Romantic Comedy -
