  9. The Dissolve's The 50 best films of the decade so far's icon

The Dissolve's The 50 best films of the decade so far

Favs/dislikes: 16:0. The middle of a decade isn’t often a cause for reflection, but maybe it should be. We tend to break time down into whatever segments make sense, especially within art, fashion, and culture, where things move quickly and change significantly: The teen world of 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High, for instance, is markedly different from the teen world of 1989’s Say Anything… Inspired by our friends at Pitchfork, The Dissolve polled its regular contributors and some friends of the site about the best films released since January 1, 2010. We compiled the results in an effort to help give shape to the decade in progress, as the cinematic landscape keeps evolving around us. When the math was done, we found the results surprising, with a No. 1 none of us predicted. (Though we probably should have.)

  15. The 100 Best Movies of the 80s's icon

The 100 Best Movies of the 80s

Favs/dislikes: 12:1. I'm a devoted fan of 80's cinema and during the last five to six years I've seen around 500 - 600 of the most popular or critically acclaimed movies hailing from this decade. Due to this enjoyable movie marathon I've been given the opportunity to re-evaluate these classical movies and measured them against eachother and against modern day standards. The result is highly subjective, but keep in mind that I was/am a man aged 28-33, which to some degree influences what kind of movies I like/liked. Check out the comments section for explanations.

  18. The Popdose 100: The Best Movies of the 2000s's icon

The Popdose 100: The Best Movies of the 2000s

Favs/dislikes: 8:0. Last year’s Thanksgiving-timed Popdose 100 proved so popular that this season we’ve compiled three critical-consensus lists for your reading (and arguing) pleasure — documenting our choices for the best films, albums and songs of the 21st century’s first decade. In fact, we’ve become so enamored of building these lists that it wouldn’t be surprising, a couple years from now, to find us offering one every day from Thanksgiving to Christmas. (Nah … that might detract from Mellowmas.) What can we say? We just love to quantify what we like, using elaborate point systems. We begin with the decade’s best movies — and, if nothing else, our list is certainly genre-film-friendly: Somewhere in the middle, Let the Right One In, Hellboy, Hot Fuzz and Mulholland Drive sit proudly side by side. Because our crew of participants isn’t all that big (11 of Popdose’s writers contributed), a few personal favorites that one might not expect somehow earned enough votes to make the cut (hello, Dodgeball!); nonetheless, we were all pleasantly surprised to see that our compiled Top 100 offers such a nice balance of prestige films and high-quality popcorn fare. Of course, since this list is being posted before Thanksgiving, 2009’s holiday films (and likely Oscar bait) aren’t represented; over the coming months we’ll no doubt be kicking ourselves that we didn’t yet know the quality of films like Up in the Air, Invictus, The Lovely Bones, Nine … Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel… With that caveat in mind, away we go!

  22. Birmingham Post: Graham Young's Top Films of the '00s's icon

Birmingham Post: Graham Young's Top Films of the '00s

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Listing them in any meaningful order would be impossible. But the criteria should certainly include longevity beyond the initial impact, achievement in making them and, above all, enjoyment and/or appreciation watching them. Except for my No 1, which has to be the Lord of the Rings, these films are in alphabetical order. (Graham Young)
  23. Paste Magazine: The 50 Best Movies of the Decade (2000-2009)'s icon

Paste Magazine: The 50 Best Movies of the Decade (2000-2009)

Favs/dislikes: 6:1. If comparing music from Gillian Welch and Outkast in our 50 Best Albums of the Decade is like apples and oranges, ranking films like Amélie, The Dark Knight and Mulholland Drive is more like apples, ice cream and foie gras. But despite the wild variety among our 50 Best Movies from 2000-2009, each is an exquisitely made, exceptionally satisfying piece of cinema that we believe will endure well after the decade has ended. There are masters like Martin Scorcese and Lars Von Trier, and relative newcomers like Fernando Meirelles and Anna Boden. There are documentaries, comedies and dramas, as well as animated films and even a super-hero flick. Mirroring a decade of globalism, the filmmakers are from the United States, New Zealand, Taiwan, Germany, Ireland, France, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Romania, Thailand, Brazil, and nearly every part of the U.K. Let these be our recommendations for your Netflix queue. Personally, after reading the loving descriptions in these pages, I’ve already got films I missed the first time around—like Syndromes and a Century and Beau Travail—on the way. —Josh Jackson, Paste editor-in-chief

    The 1980s Group Top 60

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. This is a compilation of top 10 lists from the forum discussion in the 1980s group from that decade. All movies have to be from the 80s. The way in which the movies are ranked are that 1st place in any individual list gives 10 points, 2nd place gives 9 points and so forth. If the list is in no particular order thenall movies get 5 points. Then all points are added up and we get a top list for the whole group taken together. All movies that make an individual list are included on this list. If points are equal the movie voted on by most members are ranked first. This list will be more valuable for every member that submits their personal top 10. I will update this list every time a member submits or updates their personal top 10.
