Time Out New York's Top 50 Foreign Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 19:0. "There’s no need to fear subtitles when so much of what Hollywood has come to love (pop-cultural patter, epic swordplay, urban ennui, etc.) has its original source in a distant land. But where to begin? Let us be your (extremely opinionated) guides. Our only ground rules for this foreign-language list: no silent films (sorry, Metropolis), and no movies from Britain, Australia or other English-speaking countries. We’re bound to have forgotten a raft of classics—how could we not, with a whole globe to choose from?"

    Fandor 100 Essential Chinese Movies

Favs/dislikes: 11:0. Among the many recent additions to the Fandor catalog, I am most excited by several classic Chinese films that I consider to be among the very best to have ever been made in that language: The Big Road, Street Angel (a film I love so dearly that I modeled my wedding photos after some of its iconic shots), Crossroads, Spring in a Small Town, to name a few. The sight of these titles got me thinking: what are the essential movies that anyone curious about Chinese cinema needs to see? The following video of 50 essential Chinese language films – and expanded list of 100 essential films found further below – is my attempt at an answer.

  22. IndieWire’s 35 Disturbing Foreign Films to Watch's icon

IndieWire’s 35 Disturbing Foreign Films to Watch

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. World cinema has given us plenty of auteurs hell-bent on creating the most disturbing experience possible, from Pier Paolo Pasolini to Catherine Breillat, Gaspar Noe, and Takashi Miike. Below, IndieWire highlights a selection of foreign-language films likely to keep you up at night terrified, or thinking, or both. Leave it to any country except the U.S. to render the worst possible horrors, psychological, physical, and otherwise, onscreen in unflinching detail. While some of these films listed below are, in fact, outright horror films, others take a more psychic or spiritual approach to peeling back on society’s, and humankind’s, worst tendencies — or while querying war, faith, or sexuality. While many of the directors highlighted here made a personal brand out of pushing the limits of extreme storytelling, consider the below just a selection (or starter kit, if you will) to prime you for further viewing.
