This list is taken from the companion anthology "La belle histoire du cinéma français en 101 films" published by Armand Colin. The eight periods of French film are as follows: 1895-1929 : Le cinéma muet, de l’invention au passage au parlant ; 1930-1944 : des débuts du parlant à la libération ; 1945-1958 : Le cinéma de la IVe République ; 1959-1969 : Autour de la Nouvelle Vague ; 1970-1980 : Les années politiques ; 1981-2000 : Cinéma d’auteurs et industrie culturelle ; 2001-2012 : Les vétérans et les jeunes cinéastes du second siècle ; 2013-2016 : Épilogue.
