The Indian Express 75 Movies That Celebrate The Journey of India

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. a.k.a. Shubhra Gupta’s pick: Across 7 decades, 75 films that celebrate the journey of India. As a celebration of her platinum jubilee, here’s my movie map of India that I’ve drawn through 75 films. If you were to see these movies, reflecting as many themes and genres I have been able to include, you would get an idea of the journey of the nation, as it has lurched and progressed through these decades. Some films draw an unerring bead on intractable societal problems. Some show us just what was considered the acme of entertainment at the time they came out. Some are unabashed mainstream blockbusters. Some are strictly arthouse. And they all tell stories. Most of these films are in Hindi, because that’s the cinema I know best: I have also tried to include iconic films from other languages. Of course, there will be omissions. Please do overlook those, and take me up on the commissions. Here we go:
  8. Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema (all films)'s icon

Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema (all films)

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Written by Rajadhyaksha (senior fellow, Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore) and Willemen (critical studies, Napier Univ., Edinburgh), this is a one-stop reference book on Indian cinema. Encompassing films in the major Indian languages, this revised edition (originally published in 1994 and updated to 1995) contains entries on directors, stars, producers, writers, and composers and lists birth and death dates, background information, and filmography. A chronological listing of films from 1912 onwards--complete with cast, credits, and plot synopses--is also provided; and black-and-white photographs appear throughout. In addition, a time line chronicles major milestones in Indian cinema, and a chart displays film statistics on both sound and silent films. An extensive bibliography and a name and film index rounds the volume out. No collection on Indian film can afford to be without this book; highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries. -Ravi Shenoy, Hinsdale P.L., IL Huge thanks to cronos for importing so many of these movies to ICM which made my job much easier. These often have separate Imdb IDs.Only one language version of a film exists on this list to not make it too huge and I've tried to select the most known one for this list of all the films in the book. In the sublists for the different languages the movie version for that language is included, which may not be on this list (but is still in the book). #369: The version of Shakuntala (V. Shantaram) in the book is the 122 minute version made in 1943. As this isn't on imdb, the 76 minute version released in the USA in 1947 is the one on this list. #442: The book has put up the 1949 version of '42 (A. Chakravarty), however this version was banned in many cities (but not Bombay). Only the edited 1951 version exists on imdb. #771: While Tero Nadir Parey / Beyond Thirteen Rivers (B. Saha) was made in 1961 it wasn't released until 1969. #774: The book suggests that Velugu Needalu / Thooya Ullam (A.S. Rao) was released in 1961 however imdb has put 1964 as its release year. #968: There's limited info on Uyyale / The Swing (N. Lakshminarayan) but the book puts 1969 as the release date for this, this is mistakenly put as 1964 on imdb. #1580: Mani Kaul's Idiot was made into a 180 minutes film and a 223 minutes mini-series. Only the mini-series exists on imdb.

Rohit K. Dasgupta & Sangeeta Datta's 100 Essential Indian Films

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. Although the motion picture industry in India is one of the oldest and largest in the world—with literally thousands of productions released each year—films from that country have not been as well received as those from other countries. Known for their impressive musical numbers, melodramatic plots, and nationally beloved stars, Indian films have long been ignored by the West but are now at the forefront of cinema studies. In 100 Essential Indian Films, Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta identify and discuss significant works produced since the 1930s. Examining the output of different regional film industries throughout India, this volume offers a balance of box-office blockbusters, critical successes, and less-recognized cult classics. While many studies of Indian films focus on a single language’s contributions, this encyclopedia offers a comprehensive guide to productions from across the country in various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi, Marathi, and English. 100 Essential Indian Films is an engaging volume that will appeal to both cinema scholars and those looking for an introduction to a vital component of world cinema. The movies are ordered alphabetically by their english title.

100 Years of Indian Cinema... 100 Greatest Films

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. A list created during the turn of the 100-year anniversary of Indian cinema. It was a painstaking process, and a lot of research was done to give this list an objective feel. The list is based off AFI's list of 100 Greatest American Films and Johnathan Rosenbaum's Alternative 100. Films of all Indian languages are present, from Hindi to Marathi to Tamil to Telugu, to even Assamese. Three major criteria were considered for this list, in order of priority: 1.
