Ganó una enorme popularidad con la interpretación de su personaje Cantinflas, un hombre salido de los barrios pobres que se originó del típico pelado. El personaje se asoció con parte de la identidad nacional de México y le permitió a Moreno establecer una larga y exitosa carrera cinematográfica que incluyó una participación en Hollywood.
