This page shows you the list charts. By default, the movies are ordered by how many times they have been marked as a favorite. However, you can also sort by other information, such as the total number of times it has been marked as a dislike.

  1. Erik's Recommended GLBT Films's icon

    Erik's Recommended GLBT Films

Favs/dislikes: 33:2. This is a list of my top favorite movies, series, and documentaries with gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender content. Some of the earlier films may not have overt content, but I feel they are significant in queer film history nonetheless. I used to manage my local GLBT bookstore before it closed, and now work at an independent video rental store. I have more complete lists posted in my Letterboxd account (http://letterboxd.com/erikswallow/).
  2. The Celluloid Closet: The Book's icon

    The Celluloid Closet: The Book

Favs/dislikes: 30:0. List compiled from the "Filmography" section of Vito Russo's landmark book "The Celluloid Closet" (first published in 1981, revised edition published in 1987). See also: "The Celluloid Closet: The Documentary": https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+celluloid+closet+the+documentary/moviedearest/
  3. The Celluloid Closet: The Documentary's icon

    The Celluloid Closet: The Documentary

Favs/dislikes: 29:0. This list consists of the 117 movies featured in the 1995 compilation documentary “The Celluloid Closet”. See also: "The Celluloid Closet: The Book" http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+celluloid+closet+the+book/moviedearest/
  4. Top 100 Homosexual Themed Movies's icon

    Top 100 Homosexual Themed Movies

Favs/dislikes: 28:2. I compiled this list from diverse lists from critics and polls, collecting information about the best gay themed movies for a broader audience. I weighted it to create a certain ranking. The total of films that were named is 394. Movies, which target only a homosexual audience were excluded (for example: Eating Out). I have not seen all of the movies, but I tried to focus on the "serious" movies. Enjoy!

Favs/dislikes: 26:2. Voted on by readers of AfterEllen.com.
  6. The Advocate's Top 175 Essential Films of All Time for LGBT Viewers's icon

The Advocate's Top 175 Essential Films of All Time for LGBT Viewers

Favs/dislikes: 26:1. Published June 23, 2014 on Advocate.com: "Everyone agrees a set of movies exists that are must-sees for any LGBT viewer. We just don't agree on which ones. Dare ask a gay man for his list, and he's likely to rattle off a few that come to mind quickly and then make amendments to it for the rest of your adult lives. Women don't start with the same list. Some movies are incredibly impactful on depictions of trans people or those living with HIV, or mark major firsts in film. Some are too campy to ignore (at least not if you want to keep up at brunch). The bottom line is there are legions of reasons why a movie could be considered "essential" to the LGBT community. We've ventured into the tricky territory of ranking which are most essential. To accomplish this feat, everyone on staff was asked for a top 10, then we asked readers for theirs, and finally began the arguing — always politely. Television movies aren't included (sorry, The Laramie Project, An Early Frost, and Gia). Television series aren't included either (apologies to Tales of the City, AbFab, and Angels in America). The result is potentially a guide for anyone who wants to examine our roots through film. Oh, and we reserve the right to amend it for the rest of our lives. — The Editors"
  7. Best Lesbian Flicks's icon

    Best Lesbian Flicks

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. The best in queer lady cinema - nothing like Room in Rome or that other cheap crap. Not to say there's no trashy stuff here, but it's special and smart trashy stuff. I can only rank the movies when I am on my PC, so new additions below Carol (really, Carol is not a great movie, I should not even include it here) might get ranked higher when I get round to it. The Handmaiden is awful and I absolutely can't recommend it to anyone but teenage boys. Same goes for everything but the first 20-30 minutes of Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It's not a great movie and the sex scene is not only unrealistic but just plain bad. Even bad porn is better because at least it doesn't pretend to be art. Blockers I normally wouldn't include because the lesbian story line doesn't take up much space, but gets an honorary mention because it is surprisingly good and funny. I only add movies I have watched. If you think I have missed a great movie, please send me a pm! :)
  8. Total Film's 50 Best Gay Movies's icon

Total Film's 50 Best Gay Movies

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. The most glorious, groundbreaking gay and lesbian movies of all time.
  9. The Internet film club: February 2014 LGBT Cinema watch list's icon

The Internet film club: February 2014 LGBT Cinema watch list

Favs/dislikes: 10:1. The Internet film club has decided to dedicate February 2014 to LGBT Cinema. This is the watch list. The 7 first are the most important one, the rest is extra. For more information on The Internet film club, go to: https://sites.google.com/site/theinternetfilmclub/
  10. Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time's icon

Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time

Favs/dislikes: 9:1. Films aimed at lesbian, bisexual and queer women have never exactly been noted for their universal excellence. Hollywood is a notoriously sexist machine and it’s hard enough to get a solid film about women made, let alone a solid film about women who prefer the company of other women. While unprecedented progress is being made on television, film lags sadly behind, offering few, if any, portrayals of LGBTQ women. The term “lesbian movies” is used in the headline because that is the most popular search term for people looking for films about women who like other women, but these movies feature women of all sexual orientations besides “straight.”
  11. LGBT List Cross-Reference's icon

    LGBT List Cross-Reference

Favs/dislikes: 9:0. Cross reference of films which appear on more than two of a selection of LGBT themed lists, sorted in descending order of most number of lists. Last updated Dec 2015: now made up from 28 lists.
  12. Metro Weekly Gay Films Everyone Should See's icon

Metro Weekly Gay Films Everyone Should See

Favs/dislikes: 9:0. The following list combines the original 25 films plus 50 more from the “sequels”. Ties result in a total of 81 films.
  13. Top 50 Films of Queer Cinema's icon

Top 50 Films of Queer Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 9:0. The top 50 queer cinema films as voted on by users of Rateyourmusic.com's film page.
  14. Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies's icon

    Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. This is a (non-exhaustive) list of movies that feature lesbian, bisexual, or queer women. I've tried to focus on movies that have explicitly queer women but have included some titles where the subtext has been considered noteworthy. Movies focused on trans men or straight trans women will not be included. I made this list for my own reference but decided to make it public in case someone else wants to dive into lesbian cinema. Please note that this is not intended to be a list of good lesbian films. A significant percentage of the movies are bad, contain harmful stereotypes, or are otherwise a poor representation of the community. If you don't want to waste time on those films I suggest you look to one of the other lesbian-related lists on this site. Leave a comment if you feel I've missed any movies that should be added!
  15. Queer/Art/Film's icon

    Queer/Art/Film

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Founded in June 2009, Queer/Art/Film is a New York film series where each month they invite one of the city’s homosexual artists to pick a film that has most inspired them, and present it to an audience. Some films are missing, as they are not classified by IMDb as films.
  16. Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2022)'s icon

Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2022)

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. "The goal with this list was to create a canon of lesbian+ movies that honor all the different types of work worthy of viewing. There are films that are simply fun for a casual night in, there are deeply thought-provoking films, and there are films that are mostly just here to turn you on. This list was created through a rigorous multi-step process that involved a lot of lesbian movie watching, a lot of voting, and a lot of weighing factors often ignored on mainstream film lists. It was important to us that we not take into account any metric voted on by institutions composed mostly of cis straight white men. While it’s impressive when a film about queer women or nonbinary people manages to get Oscar nominations or a high Rotten Tomatoes score, the films that get those recognitions are not often made by us or specifically for us. This list does not include films about trans men (e.g. Boys Don’t Cry, By Hook or By Crook), films about trans women exclusively interested in men (e.g. Tangerine, A Fantastic Woman), films based on queer books that had their explicit queerness removed (e.g. The Color Purple, Fried Green Tomatoes), or films where the queerness is just subtext (e.g. A League of Their Own, Rebecca). This list also doesn’t include short films, documentaries, or porn — with a handful of exceptions where length/genre lines were blurred."

Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2021)

  19. Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade's icon

Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Whenever I’ve said to someone I was working on a Top 50 Lesbian+ Films of the Decade list I’ve been met with the same question: Were there really that many? The answer: Yes, of course. But there’s a follow-up question worth asking: If there were that many, why does it feel like there weren’t? The fact is most of the films about us — and especially the films by us — do not get the attention they deserve. They don’t get the budgets they deserve, the awards they deserve, the acclaim they deserve. But that’s why we exist — that’s why Autostraddle exists — because while we may not be able to fund the trans lesbian action movie of your dreams, we can remind you of the rare queer films that joined the zeitgeist and we can bring your attention to all the others you may have missed. The “short” list voted on by the entire Autostraddle team was 171 films. Voting took place in two parts: Everyone gave each film they’d personally seen a rating out of ten stars and then chose their top five favorites. The overall ratings were used to put together one list and the favorites were used to form another. Then those two lists were combined for what you see here. Films that had many people rate them were also weighted slightly higher on that list. The intention of this algorithm was to prioritize films featuring underrepresented groups while still not discrediting popularity. I wanted this list to bring attention to our favorite under-discussed movies, but also for it to act as a definitive reflection of the decade in lesbian+ cinema. Well, without further ado – here is the Autostraddle Best Lesbian+ Films of the Decade.
  20. The BFI 30 Best LGBT Films of All Time's icon

The BFI 30 Best LGBT Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. To mark the 30th anniversary of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, BFI is delighted to announce the Top 30 LGBT Films of All Time in the first major critical survey of LGBT films. Over 100 film experts including critics, writers and programmers such as Joanna Hogg, Mark Cousins, Peter Strickland, Richard Dyer, Nick James and Laura Mulvey, as well as past and present BFI Flare programmers, have voted the Top 30 LGBT Films of All Time. The poll’s results represent 84 years of cinema and 12 countries, from countries including Thailand, Japan, Sweden and Spain, as well as films that showed at BFI Flare such as Orlando (1992), Beautiful Thing (1996), Weekend (2011) and Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013).
  21. Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time's icon

Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Curating a ranked list of the best lesbian movies (and otherwise queer movies) of all time was not easy. It involved some rounds of nominations and voting from our own team members, Riese watching so many lesbian movies in such a short period of time that she lost her overall ability to determine “good” from “bad,” a surveyance of other lists and reading a ton of movie reviews to come up with the most objective list possible. Note: This list was an updated version from the other same lists on this site. Autostraddle has since rehauled the list so completely I've made it into a newer, separate list. I've kept this list up despite being outdated in case anyone is curious as to what it used to be. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.
