  1. Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies's icon

    Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. This is a (non-exhaustive) list of movies that feature lesbian, bisexual, or queer women. I've tried to focus on movies that have explicitly queer women but have included some titles where the subtext has been considered noteworthy. Movies focused on trans men or straight trans women will not be included. I made this list for my own reference but decided to make it public in case someone else wants to dive into lesbian cinema. Please note that this is not intended to be a list of good lesbian films. A significant percentage of the movies are bad, contain harmful stereotypes, or are otherwise a poor representation of the community. If you don't want to waste time on those films I suggest you look to one of the other lesbian-related lists on this site. Leave a comment if you feel I've missed any movies that should be added!
  2. The Celluloid Closet: The Book's icon

    The Celluloid Closet: The Book

  5. Fabulous!: A Loving, Luscious, and Light-hearted Look at Film from the Gay Perspective's icon

Fabulous!: A Loving, Luscious, and Light-hearted Look at Film from the Gay Perspective

Favs/dislikes: 19:0. Published in 2004. Book description: "Defining “gay perspective” is no easy task, but author Don Reuter has created a star-studded tribute to the Hollywood moments that give gay culture its own saucy language. Collecting the most memorable one-liners, gender benders, tearjerkers, nail-biters, and heart stoppers from the world’s most celebrated picture shows, "Fabulous!" is a campy, fun-filled companion to the movies that gay men love. Hilarious, witty, thoughtful, and always surprising, "Fabulous!" is the absolute source for all things gay in cinema." This list includes all films covered in the book, starting with the "75 Fabulous! Films", followed by "Also Playing!", "Top Ten Gay Films" and "Additional Viewing".
  6. Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2020)'s icon

Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2020)

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. "The goal with this list was to create a canon of Lesbian+ film that honors all the different types of work worthy of viewing. There are films that are simply fun for a casual night in, there are deeply thought-provoking films, and there are films that are mostly just here to turn you on. This list was created through a rigorous multi-step process that involved a lot of watching, a lot of voting, and a lot of weighing factors often ignored on mainstream film lists. It was important to us that we not take into account any metric voted on by institutions composed mostly of cis straight white men. While it’s impressive when a film about queer women or nonbinary people manages to get Oscar nominations or a high Rotten Tomatoes score, the films that get those recognitions are not often made by us or specifically for us. This list does not include films about trans men (e.g. By Hook or By Crook, Tomboy), films about trans women exclusively interested in men (e.g. Tangerine, A Fantastic Woman), films based on queer books that had their explicit queerness removed (e.g. The Color Purple, Fried Green Tomatoes), or films where the queerness is just subtext (e.g. A League of Their Own, Rebecca). This list also doesn’t include short films, documentaries, or porn — with a handful of exceptions where length/genre lines were blurred." Note: This version of the list was published in early 2020. The list has since been updated again but I'll be keeping this version up for reference. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.

  9. Rotten Tomatoes' 200 Best LGBT Movies of All Time's icon

Rotten Tomatoes' 200 Best LGBT Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. "To be considered for the list, a movie had to prominently feature gay, lesbian, trans, or queer characters; concern itself centrally with LGBT themes; present its LGBT characters in a fair and realistic light; and/or be seen as a touchpoint in the evolution of queer cinema. And it had to be Fresh. The final list was culled from a longlist of hundreds, after which the films were ranked according to the Adjusted Tomatometer, which acts as a kind of inflation adjustment, taking into consideration the Tomatometer score, as well as the number of reviews a film received relative to the average number of reviews for films released that same year."
  10. The Advocate's Top 175 Essential Films of All Time for LGBT Viewers's icon

The Advocate's Top 175 Essential Films of All Time for LGBT Viewers

Favs/dislikes: 26:1. Published June 23, 2014 on Advocate.com: "Everyone agrees a set of movies exists that are must-sees for any LGBT viewer. We just don't agree on which ones. Dare ask a gay man for his list, and he's likely to rattle off a few that come to mind quickly and then make amendments to it for the rest of your adult lives. Women don't start with the same list. Some movies are incredibly impactful on depictions of trans people or those living with HIV, or mark major firsts in film. Some are too campy to ignore (at least not if you want to keep up at brunch). The bottom line is there are legions of reasons why a movie could be considered "essential" to the LGBT community. We've ventured into the tricky territory of ranking which are most essential. To accomplish this feat, everyone on staff was asked for a top 10, then we asked readers for theirs, and finally began the arguing — always politely. Television movies aren't included (sorry, The Laramie Project, An Early Frost, and Gia). Television series aren't included either (apologies to Tales of the City, AbFab, and Angels in America). The result is potentially a guide for anyone who wants to examine our roots through film. Oh, and we reserve the right to amend it for the rest of our lives. — The Editors"
  11. AfterElton.com's Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies's icon

AfterElton.com's Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies

Favs/dislikes: 14:0. Voted on by readers of AfterElton.com in 2012. This list actually combines their two lists, the "Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies" and then "The 25 Greatest Gay Documentaries", thus a total of 125 films.
  12. Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time's icon

Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Films aimed at lesbian, bisexual and queer women have never exactly been noted for their universal excellence. Hollywood is a notoriously sexist machine and it’s hard enough to get a solid film about women made, let alone a solid film about women who prefer the company of other women. While unprecedented progress is being made on television, film lags sadly behind, offering few, if any, portrayals of LGBTQ women. Curating a ranked list of the best lesbian movies (and otherwise queer movies) of all time was not easy. It involved some rounds of nominations and voting from our own team members, Riese watching so many lesbian movies in such a short period of time that she lost her overall ability to determine “good” from “bad,” a surveyance of other lists and reading a ton of movie reviews to come up with the most objective list possible. Note: This list was an updated version from the other same lists on this site. Autostraddle has since rehauled the list so completely I've made it into a newer, separate list. I've kept this list up despite being outdated in case anyone is curious as to what it used to be. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.
  13. Awards Daily's 101 Years of Gay Cinema (bolded titles only)'s icon

Awards Daily's 101 Years of Gay Cinema (bolded titles only)

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. In 2011, readers of Awards Daily voted for the best LGBT films since 1970. In 2013, Ryan Adams (editor of Awards Daily) expanded the original list, and published a list of 374 important LGBT films (including films from earlier years). In addition, he bolded 111 of the most important LGBT films. This is a list of the bolded films.

  15. Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time's icon

Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time

Favs/dislikes: 9:1. Films aimed at lesbian, bisexual and queer women have never exactly been noted for their universal excellence. While unprecedented progress is being made on television, film lags sadly behind, offering few, if any, portrayals of LGBTQ women. The term “lesbian movies” is used in the headline because that is the most popular search term for people looking for films about women who like other women, but these movies feature women of all sexual orientations besides “straight.”
  16. 101 Must-See Movies for Gay Men's icon

  20. Best Lesbian Flicks's icon

    Best Lesbian Flicks

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. The best in queer lady cinema - nothing like Room in Rome or that other cheap crap. Not to say there's no trashy stuff here, but it's special and smart trashy stuff. I can only rank the movies when I am on my PC, so new additions below Carol (really, Carol is not a great movie, I should not even include it here) might get ranked higher when I get round to it. The Handmaiden is awful and I absolutely can't recommend it to anyone but teenage boys. Same goes for everything but the first 20-30 minutes of Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It's not a great movie and the sex scene is not only unrealistic but just plain bad. Even bad porn is better because at least it doesn't pretend to be art. Blockers I normally wouldn't include because the lesbian story line doesn't take up much space, but gets an honorary mention because it is surprisingly good and funny. I only add movies I have watched. If you think I have missed a great movie, please send me a pm! :)

  24. Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade's icon

Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Whenever I’ve said to someone I was working on a Top 50 Lesbian+ Films of the Decade list I’ve been met with the same question: Were there really that many? The answer: Yes, of course. But there’s a follow-up question worth asking: If there were that many, why does it feel like there weren’t? The fact is most of the films about us — and especially the films by us — do not get the attention they deserve. They don’t get the budgets they deserve, the awards they deserve, the acclaim they deserve. But that’s why we exist — that’s why Autostraddle exists — because while we may not be able to fund the trans lesbian action movie of your dreams, we can remind you of the rare queer films that joined the zeitgeist and we can bring your attention to all the others you may have missed. The “short” list voted on by the entire Autostraddle team was 171 films. Voting took place in two parts: Everyone gave each film they’d personally seen a rating out of ten stars and then chose their top five favorites. The overall ratings were used to put together one list and the favorites were used to form another. Then those two lists were combined for what you see here. Films that had many people rate them were also weighted slightly higher on that list. The intention of this algorithm was to prioritize films featuring underrepresented groups while still not discrediting popularity. I wanted this list to bring attention to our favorite under-discussed movies, but also for it to act as a definitive reflection of the decade in lesbian+ cinema. Well, without further ado – here is the Autostraddle Best Lesbian+ Films of the Decade.
