Les 100 chefs-d'oeuvre du film musical (100 Musical Masterpieces) by Jean-Marc Bouineau focuses on movie musicals in the broader sense of the word musical. Instead of focusing solely on Hollywood musicals, it also shines a light on the concert film (The Last Waltz, Woodstock), the Opera film (Carmen, La bohème, Don Giovanni) or the musical biopic (The Glenn Miller Story, Mahler, Amadeus.)
This list consists of the 124 movies featured in the “That’s Entertainment!” compilation documentary series, plus those three films: “That’s Entertainment!” (1974), “That’s Entertainment, Part II” (1976) and “That’s Entertainment! III” (1994).
Consider the following not so much a definitive list but as a starting point for checking out some of the weirdest and most pleasurable musical comedies in my personal pantheon. The order is chronological.
The official 501 Must See Movies is compiled from a list of about 50 movies from 10 genres. These lists use the second edition which contains between 50 and 60 movies in each genre and breaks them out into their own lists for easier completion.
The Internet film club has decided to dedicate April 2014 to Modern Musicals (from the 70s to the present). This is the watch list. The first 7 are the most important ones, the next 50 (down to 58) are the 2nd most important ones. The rest is extra.
