    Cinemacom's 500 & More - a Western Lover's Listing

Favs/dislikes: 11:0. This is intended to be a comprehensive list of all Western movies even remotely worth seeing from the past 100 years, interesting, entertaining or in some way provocative or memorable. I cannot find Duelo ao Por-do-Sol {Sunset Duel} - Gustavo Schneider (Alexandre Buaes), supposed to be from 1998.
  3. 500 Top Western Movies's icon

    500 Top Western Movies

Favs/dislikes: 45:0. A list for the die-hard western fan! This long and diverse list of great western movies is largely derived from a list found on Cinemacom.com entitled "500 & More - A Western Lover's List". However, Cinemacom's list is heavily slanted toward the traditional western and admittedly excludes all western comedies and many good spaghetti westerns. I wanted to create a more balanced list and so I cross referenced Cinemacom's list against IMDB user ratings in the western genre and made some thoughtful modifications which add some diversity. If you love westerns I hope this list will help you explore the genre.

  12. PUNQ's Top 100 Westerns of the 1930s's icon

    PUNQ's Top 100 Westerns of the 1930s

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. From PUNQ's description: "The 1930s is known as one of the worst decades for the Western genre. Between The Big Trail (1930) and Stagecoach (1939) there was barely any A-western made. Only between 10-15 westerns could be considered a big budget production. The big studios basically didn't want to touch them apart from a minor upswing in 1936, but the small studios without any money made a ton of them. Hardly any of them any good. Around 1000 westerns was created during the decade, and I've seen half of them. This is a list for those wondering what to track down from this semi-obscure wild west era."

The Western Genre: From Lordsburg to Big Whiskey offers close readings of the definitive American film movement as represented by such leading exponents as John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Sam Peckinpah. In his consideration of such iconic motifs as the Outlaw Hero and the Lone Rider, John Saunders traces the development of perennial aspects of the genre, its continuity and, importantly, its change. Representations of morality and masculinity are also foregrounded in consideration of the genre's major stars John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, and such films as Shane, Rio Bravo, The Wild Bunch, and Unforgiven.
