Found the book at my local library. Here's a bit of info about the selections.

The final top 100 was the result of a combination of personal top 20 lists from 24 Australian film makers, critics and commentators. This included Phillip Noyce, David Stratton, David Caesar, Scott Hicks, Fenella Kernebone, Margaret Pomeranz, Richard Franklin and Scott Hocking to name a few.
'Contributors were asked to not only evaluate the work on its artistic, narrative and technical merits, but to also consider (where relevant) its cultural significance, the prior and post achievements of those behind and before the camera, whether the film is indicative of the time/period in which it was made, and, most importantly, to discuss elements that distinguish the film as being quintessentially Australian.'

Hope this provides some insight into the inclusion of certain films

I just noticed the '100' overlay on Australia is upside down. Down-under. Hilarious!

The fact that only one of them had been made when the book came out probably doesn't help.

The Proposition, my favourite Australian movie, didn't make the list...

Released too close to publication?

Bit confused as to how The Piano makes it on the list when it has an NZ director and is set in NZ?

Did they run out of films or am I missing something?

By no means would I say it is a bad list, in my opinion looking down the list there are no glaring omissions and looking at the other lists it was probalby the best (though the Cinema Papers list may have more clout seeing as it was written by a group of 6,000 rather than just one writer). But if this list gives more attention to Australian film than that's great.

There isn't a great deal of Australian lists about, this one and the Cinema Papers list seem to be the most representative of Australian cinema. It would help if the book was available somewhere [cheap] so we could see the reasoning behind some inclusions.

This seems a strange list, quite a few look like they are on the list because they were hits outside Australia regardless of how well it fits the criteria of Greatest Films of Australian Cinema (Crocodile Dundee is on the list) but there are some better choices in there. I think they could of chosen a better list of Australian films to become official.

About time, now we need an official New Zealand list as well.

The Rage in Placid Lake should be included... or is that just a guilty pleasure of mine alone?

Hmm. Only two checks. I have to get caught up with my Australian cinema.

Congrats on the official list! Australia must be proud.
