I, like many people, hate that 1001 always includes recent films that many feel won't stand the test of time. I always thought they should put a restriction on how long to wait to put a film on the list (like the way the National Film Registry only allows films that are at least 10 years older than their release date). If they only waited 5 or 10 years to include new films, then they would know which ones are still culturally relevant and which ones have faded away.

You should update every decade, NOT EVERY YEAR!

Ins and outs of the 2019 edition:

Phantom Thread
The Greatest Showman
Crazy Rich Asians
A Star is Born
Avengers: Infinity War
The Favourite
Sorry to Bother You

Buffalo 66
Three Kings
Amores Perros
Yi Yi
Talk to Her
Under the Shadow
Dawson City: Frozen Time
Lady MacBeth

In my opinion, it's pretty strange to see the likes of Amores Perros, Yi Yi, Magnolia and Hable con Ella go out, and the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, A Star is Born and The Greatest Showman get in. But whatever - it's their list and their logic. Should not take these things too seriously, I constantly try to remind myself. :)

I've always been discouraged from "tackling" these 1001 movies lists, as they seem rather impenetrable and lacking in proper context. Well done to whoever finishes them, mind.

Please bear in mind that this is not the "1001 best movies of all time" list.

The list is organized a bit weirdly on the site - the first 66 movies are in alphabetical order, and then from 67 on the movies are listed in chronological order....

A very thorough list, though some "essential films" are missing like The Great Dictator or Fanny and Alexander. The picks for the 2000s are a bit strange too. Paranormal Activity, The Hangover and Monsters more essential than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Amelie, Mulholland Drive, Lost in Translation, Million Dollar Baby, etc.?

i look at lists like this as a list of films i should see. not a list of the only films i am supposed to see. everybody has their own opinion when it comes to films and all lists are mostly subjective. there are lots of fun loving movies that will never be on a must see list og a top 100 list but they are still fun to watch.

I am utterly baffled by the complaint about Carol, since it was never on the list to my knowledge, the movie having been released in early 2016 after the 2015 edition was already out, and before the current 2016 edition was released.

The movie I am most upset about being removed is Drive, especially when it was used to make room for the likes of Star Wars Episode VII.

Removed in 2016
#977 Cave of Forgotten Dreams
#982 Senna
#985 Drive
#986 The Act of Killing
#987 Amour
#990 Django Unchained
#997 The Wolf of Wall Street
#1000 Citizenfour
#1003 Guardians of the Galaxy
#1006 The Theory of Everything

Added in 2016
#998 The Look of Silence
#999 Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens
#1000 The Revenant
#1001 Saul fia
#1002 Bridge of Spies
#1003 The Big Short
#1004 Spotlight
#1005 Tangerine
#1006 Straight Outta Compton
#1007 Mad Max: Fury Road

Thanks to everyone who went through the trouble of listing removed films, and giving honorable mentions! I love seeing all the options and recommendations.
