Donnie Darko is at #46 and falling, while Hachiko just entered this list... :'( that is really sad to me, I'm not even joking.

munshi, thank you for helping me to understand my 44 year old mother. I was unaware that as a westerner she watched chinese/korean movies for the martial arts/kung fu action.

Munshi, since you seem to have mostly missed my point, let me ask you this: After an Indian watches a big Bollywood blockbuster, what website do they go to rate that film?

Well ur just trying to justify ur point by saying Chinese/koreans are not using Imdb as much as d rest. Thats ur point of view knowing that u aint even a chinese or for that matter an indian to know about the "MOVIE BEHAVIOURS" of the class. And by the way so-called"westerners film goers" you r referring to arent the authority to decide which movies are good or which r bad.The westerners watch chinese/korean movies as they like martial arts/kungfu action movies so the high rating on IMDb. for example... "crouching tiger hidden dragon" !!! FYI ..ur missing the point that diffrent cultures watch movies for diffrent purposes.. As of indians would laugh at kungfu movies, westerners adore them even if the story is repetative and crap. Same way indian drama or romcom movies are loved by people of the sub-continent( bangladesh included) as well as Arabs and turks so the huge number of IMDB votes. :)

Those are not IMDb lists. They are not voted by the public. You've started comparing apples to oranges.

The Asian films on the IMDb lists are generally of much higher quality because the general Asian populace does not vote for them (as they're busy using websites such as Naver that utilize their own character sets). Instead, they've been voted on by more seasoned Western filmgoers who are more critical of their media.

You seem to be missing this above point and unnecessarily going on the defensive.

Ging chat goo si (police story ) -1985 is on 3 official lists.. with an IMDB score of 7.5. Any serious movie critic will agree that its pure crap. That said what i am trying to explain to you is people of diffrent cultures expect diffrent things from a movie as in some people watch the movie for its action some just for music and perverts would watch it just for the sex appeal of the movie..etc etc.Rarely a movie would appeal to all of its diffrent classes of viewers. Now coming to Rang de basanti i think the message of the movie was for the "youth of india" to do something to contribute to the development of India and not just sit at home and curse the politicians and shit. FYI movie sent a non-violent message to the youth (you wud have understood it if u had paid attention to it rather than criticising the camera quality etc) .Indian cinema is growing and i agree it hasnt caught up with hollywood yet but u should agree that so are many more other movie industries.

Rang De Basanti has serious issues with a message that I find irresponsible and sensationalist to the youth of India. And please don't try to pass it off by saying "You're not Indian." That's a weak excuse often reserved for films that lack good fundamentals.

Tickets sold also doesn't make a film great. Don't think we need to look beyond Avatar for that.

Regards to Chinese/Korean films, I asked quite specifically which films you consider "crap." Police Story is not on any of these IMDb lists, which is the matter at hand.

India is obviously capable of making great films, but you are needlessly getting offended and defending mediocrity. As rohit says below, the Indian populace wants entertainment. And afterwards, if they had a good time, they go home and rate the film a 9 or a 10. The same happened for The Avengers, etc. Mainstream films, more often than not, don't pass the test of time. But the problem, of course, is that mainstream Indian cinema is still in hardcore copycat mode. What you see there now has been done and done arguably better elsewhere.

In contrast, you think Firaaq would get the same kind of negativity if it appeared on one of these lists?

and about ur question.. lolz u really think none of the chinese/korean movies are crap?? get realistic... there are plenty of them..for example police story series by jackie chan (most of his movies too)... if u call urself a critic of movies then u must agree that they are popular just because of martial arts thingy. Its pure crap and reviewed as so by many. There are hundreds of movies based on kungfu, martial arts and they all have similar stories. i would call that repetative and crap.
So my point is every country has its own style and so-called type of movie making and it should be judged based on its culture and not just its story.

I agree with pitn. The main problem lies in the audience's love for anything that is even remotely decent. That lets the mediocre run-of-the-mill get by with accolades.
The Indian audience, most of it, doesn't treat their cinema critically, or as a matter of fact, seriously. If you are there just to have fun, you let a lot of flaws slide.

LOLZ@ rang de basanti.. comeon u cant be serious that u didnt like that movie:O .. that movie was based on a social issue in India which am sure being non-indian u aresnt expected to know. It was one of the biggest blockbusters in India smashing many box-office records. FYI i think more than a Billion people liked the movie.. so i guess it says for itself.

Munshi: What Korean/Chinese films are "crap," as you say? Mainstream mediocrity from India shows up on IMDb because India uses English widely. Koreans and Chinese have their own sites (such as Daum or Naver). So, in this sense, language does matter.

The general sentiment here isn't anti-India, but rather anti-bad movies. And it just so happens that almost all of the Bollywood films in these decades lists are mediocre at best, terrible at worst (Rang De Basanti, anyone?).

@ life as fiction...Well the lists are vote driven. There are many chinese/korean movies which are crap and on many of the lists. Thats because most of its viewers/votes are from people who r chinese/korean themselves. its true Kahaani isnt the best of the movie but still through these impartial lists many of the people have watched it. A movie is a movie be it from any language. We are way beyond the language barrier.
