Favs/dislikes: 13:0. This list is from Stephen Cavalier's book The World History of Animation (2011). The book starts with an introduction and brief histories of world animation, with a list of key films for each continent. This is a list of the key films at the beginning of the book. 5. iCheckMovies' Most Favorite Horror Films's icon

iCheckMovies' Most Favorite Horror Films

Favs/dislikes: 31:0. These are iCheckMovies' favorite horror films, calculated using this formula: favorites / (checks+75) This list includes horror shorts. I used IMDb to determine which films are horror, so there might be some strange inclusions and omissions. Last updated: October 5, 2012
6. iCM Forum's Favorite Shorts's icon

iCM Forum's Favorite Shorts

Favs/dislikes: 42:0. This is a list of the iCM Forum's favorite shorts, as voted by 49 members of the Unofficial iCheckMovies Forum in 2019. 8. ASIFA's Top 50 Animated Short Films's icon

ASIFA's Top 50 Animated Short Films

Favs/dislikes: 37:0. In 2010, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASIFA (International Animated Film Association), 25 animation experts from 18 countries voted for the 50 best animated short films of the last 50 years (there are 51 shorts on the list because of a tie).
9. Laputa Animation Festival's 150 Best Animations of All Time (modified version)'s icon

Laputa Animation Festival's 150 Best Animations of All Time (modified version)

Favs/dislikes: 26:0. At the 2003 Laputa Animation Festival, 140 animation artists and film critics from around the world listed their 20 favorite animations. They used these lists to create a top 150 list and published the list in a book. This is not exactly the same as the original list because I made a few changes. The original list includes series of shorts (some of which include more than 100 shorts). Each short is listed separately on IMDb. I'm including only the most acclaimed short from each series (or the 1st short if they are equally acclaimed). I'm including the 1980 version of The King and the Mockingbird because it's the complete version of the film (the book specifies the original version, but I'm guessing that both versions received votes and then they combined them). The Overcoat (Shinel) is an unfinished film. 10. Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Animated Films (2012)'s icon

Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Animated Films (2012)

Favs/dislikes: 58:0. This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria. The list is divided into 5 sections: I. Narrative Films Hollywood Genres (with an emphasis on the classical studio era) II. Non-Fiction Films III. Animated Films IV. Single-channel Video According to the list source, this section is incomplete (i.e. they're planning to expand it in the future). This section focuses mostly on short films. Only 8 of them are feature-length. 3 of the list items are "A ___ cartoon" (Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker). This means you have to watch at least one, but it's not important which one. On this list I included only the most acclaimed cartoon from each series. The list includes only the "Mirror People" segment of Fantastic Animation Festival.
11. Ofuji Noburo Award for Best Animated Film's icon

Ofuji Noburo Award for Best Animated Film

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. The Ōfuji Noburō Award is one of the awards at the Mainichi Film Concours, and it honor excellence in Japanese animation. In the 1980s, big budget films started to dominate the award. In 1989, they established the Animation Grand Award to reward big budget films, which allowed the Ōfuji Noburō Award to focus on lower budget independent films. Missing from IMDb: Murder (1964) The Chair (1964) Two Pikes (1961) The Ugly Duckling (1968) The Kindly Lion (1970) The Flower and the Mole (1970) Home, My Home (1970) Tenma no Torayan (1971) Praise be to Small Ills (1973) The Water Seed (1975) Towards the Rainbow (1977) The Magic Fox (1982) Mizu no Sei Kappa Hyakuzu (1998) The Moon that Fell into the Sea (2013) Crazy Little Thing (2014)
12. BFI's 50 Essential South Asian Films's icon

BFI's 50 Essential South Asian Films

Favs/dislikes: 27:0. "This list of films is supposed to be a representative sample of the kinds of films that are produced and consumed in South Asia and elsewhere. It formed part of bfi's South Asian Cinema 2002 programme designed to present to the British public for the first time the immense diversity of South Asian cinema." This is the list that was compiled by experts. BFI also ran a user poll. The list is divided into 5 sections: 1-10: Bangladeshi 11-20: Diaspora 21-30: Indian 31-40: Pakistani 41-50: Sri Lankan
13. Mubi Forum's Favorite Indian Films's icon

Mubi Forum's Favorite Indian Films

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. This is a list of the best Indian films, as voted by members of the Mubi Forum in 2013.
14. All Films on iCM Lists That You Can Watch on IMDb's icon

All Films on iCM Lists That You Can Watch on IMDb

Favs/dislikes: 39:0. You can watch all of these films for free by clicking the "Watch It" or "Watch Now" link on the IMDb page. Some of the films are only available in certain countries (e.g. the ones hosted on Hulu), so if you don't live in one of those countries then you won't see the link. Although some of the films are hosted on archive.org, this list does not include all of the films on archive.org. It only includes the ones that are linked from IMDb.
15. Time Out London's The 100 Best Sci-fi Movies's icon

Time Out London's The 100 Best Sci-fi Movies

Favs/dislikes: 17:0. In 2014, Time Out London asked 136 leading sci-fi experts, filmmakers, science fiction writers, film critics, and scientists to vote for the best sci-fi films of all time. The ballots are available on Time Out's website.
16. Ric Meyer's The Top 100 Kung Fu Movies's icon

Ric Meyer's The Top 100 Kung Fu Movies

Favs/dislikes: 18:0. This list is from Ric Meyer's book Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Book (2011). He uses a loose definition of "kung fu," so this list includes some films from other Hong Kong action genres as well.
17. Histoire(s) De Films Francais: 91 French Films's icon

Histoire(s) De Films Francais: 91 French Films

Favs/dislikes: 33:1. This list is from Jean-Luc Douin's book Histoire(s) De Films Francais (2005) about the history of French cinema.
18. Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time's icon

Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 103:1. I compiled this list from many different polls, lists, and awards, using a weighted point system to rank the shorts. I'm defining short as any film with a runtime of 45 minutes or less. This list focuses more on animation than the Brief Encounters list. It includes many acclaimed animated shorts which are missing from Brief Encounters, most notably The Man Who Planted Trees and Ruka. Missing from IMDb: The Magic Fox (1982) (it would've been ranked #132)
19. BIFF's Asian Cinema 100's icon

BIFF's Asian Cinema 100

Favs/dislikes: 22:0. The ‘Asian Cinema 100’ is a collaboration project with the Busan International Film Festival and the Busan Cinema Center to shed light on the values of Asian film. The list will be updated every 5 years to act as a guide for the aesthetic value and history of Asian cinema and to discover hidden masterpieces and talented directors of Asia. For the project, 73 prominent film professionals at home and abroad included film critics such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Tony Rayns, Hasumi Shigehiko, and renowned festival executives, programmers, and directors Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Bong Joon-ho, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. They recommended their top 10 films, resulting in 113 selections and 106 directors (including joint rankings) for the final 100 list. This list is from 2015. See the list source for the top directors and to see which films are tied.

23. Mubi's Top 250 Highest Rated Films's icon

Mubi's Top 250 Highest Rated Films

Favs/dislikes: 24:1. The highest rated films on Mubi (including shorts and mini-series), ranked using this formula: (rating*votes + 3*30) / (votes+30) Last updated: Jan 20, 2015 This list doesn't exist on Mubi, so I had to make it myself. See this spreadsheet for the top 1000. Notes: -I only included the first part of The Human Condition and Histoire(s) du cinéma. On Mubi they have 1 entry for the entire series. -The following films appear twice in the top 250, so I only included 1 of each: Fanny and Alexander and Scenes from a Marriage (theatrical and TV), The Decalogue (mini-series and episode 1), Tie Xi Qu (first 2 parts). To make up for this, I added 4 extra films at the bottom. -2 TV episodes made the top 250: Twin Peaks: Pilot and Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall. -The list includes Science Is Fiction, which is a collection of 23 shorts.
