12 Chinese Film Classics Available on YouTube

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. A dozen classic black and white Chinese films from the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s are now available for free on YouTube — with English subtitles. The movies represent some of the key highlights from China’s first “Golden Period” of cinema and are a Sino cinephile’s dream come true. The treasure trove of films is being made available courtesy of the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia and includes Goddess and New Women, both of which star tragic silent screen legend Ruan Lingyu, plus, Street Angel, with singer Zhou Xuan. Also in the mix are Spring in a Small Town, Crows and Sparrows and Wanderings of Sanmao, titles which regularly feature when it comes to lists of the most important Chinese films ever made. 6. Entertainment Weekly’s Top 50 Cult Movies's icon

Entertainment Weekly’s Top 50 Cult Movies

Favs/dislikes: 30:0. Published in 2003, Entertainment Weekly Magazine described their Top 50 Cult Movies thusly: "most died at the box office, some of them horribly. Mangled and despised, they were re-animated on video. And now they compose our cultural Esperanto, a subliminal vocabulary of vaguely subversive images, ideas, and phrases that we continue to obsess over and dissect at parties, around water coolers, in bars, over the blaring banalities of the mainstream media din. They are Cult Movies...So if you take your dead evil and your buckaroos banzai-ed, pour yourself a tall glass of Kool-Aid and peruse this list…" Note: Reader response to the original list was so great, that EW subsequently annexed their list with 11 “readers’ choice” picks. Why 11? Well, it's one longer, isn't it …?

    Avant-Garde Film - Motion Studies

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. In this book, Scott MacDonald examines 15 of the most suggestive and useful avant-garde films. Through in-depth readings of these works, MacDonald takes viewers on a critical circumnavigation of the conventions of moviegoing as seen by filmmakers who have rebelled against the conventions. MacDonald's discussions do not merely analyze the films; they provide a useful, accessible, jargon-free critical apparatus for viewing avant-garde film, which communicates the author's pleasure in exploring "impenetrable" works with students and public audiences. The book is divided into three sections ("From Stern to Film", "Psychic Excursions" and "Premonitions of a Global Cinema") with five films in each section. ISBN: 978-0-521-38821-4

    Blazing Magnums

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. All 26 films mentioned in the first and only volume of Blazing Magnums compiled by Tristan Thompson and Paul J. Brown for publisher Midnight Media. Poliziotteschi films constitute a sub-genre of crime and action film that emerged in Italy in the late 1960s and reached the height of their popularity in the 1970s. Poliziotteschi films are also known as poliziottesco, Italo-crime, Euro-crime, poliziesco or simply Italian crime films. The term poliziottesco, a fusion of the words poliziotto ("policeman") and the desinence -esco ("related to", akin to the English "-esque"), indicates 1970s-era Italian-produced "tough cop" and crime movies. Recurring elements in poliziotteschi films include graphic and brutal violence, organized crime, car chases, vigilantism, heists, gunfights, and corruption up to the highest levels.

  20. Byrge & Miller’s “The Screwball Comedy Films”'s icon

Byrge & Miller’s “The Screwball Comedy Films”

Favs/dislikes: 29:0. "This list is based off the book The Screwball Comedy Films: A History and Filmography, 1934-1942 by Duane Byrge and Robert Milton Miller. From the introduction: 'A screwball comedy was at heart a love story. It’s central romance was frequently instigated by an aggressive, even eccentric woman whose efforts to prod her more stodgy and conventional beau along the rocky road to the altar primed the comic mechanisms for a great deal of humor-by-embarassment. Improbable events, mistaken identities, and ominously misleading circumstantial evidence quickly compounded upon each other, albeit by seemingly logical progression, until a frantic conclusion in which even the impending marriage gives only faint promise of providing some whit of order as antidote to the previous narrative chaos. This book is intended as an historical menu for the feast, as well as a guide to sorting out and identifying the certifiably screwball from the much larger parade of vintage cinema comedy which surrounds it in the program schedules and on the cassette racks. Each of the following freature films described in the second section of this book has been found by the authors to qualify as sufficiently "screwy," by the standards of the era, to merit inclusion in our annotated filmography.' The films are listed chronologically."

    One Hundred Great Documentaries (OUP)

Favs/dislikes: 18:0. Patricia Aufderheide's list from 'Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction' - part of the highly regarded series from Oxford University Press. "These documentaries have been widely seen and discussed, and have been in many cases at the center of controversies; in other cases they have provided valuable teaching resources. They are all accessible for renting or buying for your private collection. You can use the index in this book and other books mentioned in the references, imdb.com, your local library, Netflix, Google, and the Library of Congress to find out more about why these films have attracted attention and esteem. Viewing this collection will set you up nicely with a context to watch your latest favorite, argue with the list, and build your own top one hundred." From another perspective, an essay film could be defined as a documentary film visual basis combined with a form of commentary that contains elements of self-portrait (rather than autobiography), where the signature (rather than the life-story) of the filmmaker is apparent. The cinematic essay often blends documentary, fiction, and experimental film making using a tones and editing styles."
