  2. Mightysparks' Favourite Horror Movies's icon

    Mightysparks' Favourite Horror Movies

Favs/dislikes: 4:2. This is a personal list of my favourite horror movies. Some rankings may seem weird due to me not considering certain films as 'horror' as much as others (so some of my overall favourites are quite low since this is a 'horror' list). Order could change depending on my mood, so take it with a grain of salt.

  4. Paste Magazine: The 50 Best Movies of the Decade (2000-2009)'s icon

Paste Magazine: The 50 Best Movies of the Decade (2000-2009)

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. If comparing music from Gillian Welch and Outkast in our 50 Best Albums of the Decade is like apples and oranges, ranking films like Amélie, The Dark Knight and Mulholland Drive is more like apples, ice cream and foie gras. But despite the wild variety among our 50 Best Movies from 2000-2009, each is an exquisitely made, exceptionally satisfying piece of cinema that we believe will endure well after the decade has ended. There are masters like Martin Scorcese and Lars Von Trier, and relative newcomers like Fernando Meirelles and Anna Boden. There are documentaries, comedies and dramas, as well as animated films and even a super-hero flick. Mirroring a decade of globalism, the filmmakers are from the United States, New Zealand, Taiwan, Germany, Ireland, France, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Romania, Thailand, Brazil, and nearly every part of the U.K. Let these be our recommendations for your Netflix queue. Personally, after reading the loving descriptions in these pages, I’ve already got films I missed the first time around—like Syndromes and a Century and Beau Travail—on the way. —Josh Jackson, Paste editor-in-chief

    Sight & Sound's 50 best films of 2019

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. In a year in which the future of cinema – of independent filmmaking, and collective film-watching – seems more fraught than ever, our poll of 100 S&S contributors has produced a list of 50 outstanding reasons for movie watching. Here below the reflections of past masters jostle with bold experiments from new voices – capped by a triumphant top movie that finds its British female director both looking back and moving forward. In our January 2020 issue we spotlight some of the themes and stories that have defined the cinema of 2019 – from post-#MeToo movies to the fortunes of the European arthouse, as well as expanded cinema and a countdown of the best TV of the year.
  7. Submissions to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film's icon

Submissions to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. This is a list of submissions to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Nine shortlisted contenders will be revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations. This list is made from the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submissions_to_the_86th_Academy_Awards_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film If you find any errors, please inform me. UPDATE: Thank you for the comments. I have added the missing movies and replaced one that was disqualified. The list should be correct now, but fell free to contact me if you find errors. 10. Best Texas Films's icon

    Best Texas Films

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. This list is inspired by the article "No Country for Bad Movies" from the June, 2011 issue of Texas Monthly. Their panel was limited by criteria such as no documentaries, nothing made-for-TV, and each film "had to really feel as if it could only have been made in Texas". Their official results comprise listings 1-10 below, in no particular order. Everything after #10 is an at-large selection made by me based on looser guidelines, namely anything partially set in or partially filmed in Texas.

  17. TimeOut's 100 Best Thriller Films of All Time's icon

TimeOut's 100 Best Thriller Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Alfred Hitchcock perfected the thriller movie with a string of classics that remain unmatched. But from today’s perspective, there’s more to them than ice blondes and wrong-men scenarios. Every decade gets the thrillers it deserves, from post-World War II film noir and Nixon-era conspiracies to even the tawdry (but loveable) ’80s erotic thrillers. We had a hard time choosing our favourites, but after much interrogation under a naked light bulb, we did it. List created in June 2018

Film Comment's Best Unreleased Films of 2014

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. According to the source: "A note on the poll’s workings: over 100 North American colleagues ranked their favorites in two categories: 1) those that received theatrical runs and 2) those viewed this year but currently with no announced plans for U.S. theatrical distribution. For each ballot, a first-place choice was allotted 20 points, 19 for second, and so on." These are the films in the second category.
