Nikolas Schreck's The Satanic Screen

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. work in progress... Satan has figured in film since the very birth of cinema. "The Satanic Screen" documents all of Satan's cinematic incarnations, covering not only the horror genre but also a whole range of sub-genres including hardcore porn, mondo and underground film. Heavily illustrated with rare still photographs, posters and arcana, the book also investigates the perennial symbiotic interplay between Satanic cinema and leading occultists (for example, Aleister Crowley), making it essential reading for anyone interested in the Black Arts and their continuing representation in populist culture.
  4. BDSM moments in films's icon

    BDSM moments in films

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. bdsm and fetishism is not a common subject in mainstream cinema, yet it turns up regularly in very different contexts. This list is meant to compile these moments - sometimes even whole films - in order to demonstrate how present this alternative eroticism is and the variety it offers. This gives us the possibility to study the way mainstream culture looks upon it and shows how the subject is being focused on and integrated in the script.

  8. Schizophrenia in Film (personally vetted)'s icon

    Schizophrenia in Film (personally vetted)

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. This is the companion list to the main "search and dump" list: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/schizophrenia+in+film+not+personally+vetted+list/minkin/ This is a list of films that I have personally reviewed and have found sufficient "evidence" to determine that they pass muster and contain a schizophrenic character. This is of course extremely difficult to do, as a non-professional + being unable to ask the character questions: "have your symptoms persisted for six months or longer?" - So these are all determinations that I can make with the available evidence. It is possible (I know as I have been doing so for six+ months) to read a schizo character or element into every single film. As a result, this list is only for films that have someone who meets the clinical definition of schizophrenia, which means they must meet TWO of the primary symptoms. The only exception is if the movie outright calls them schizophrenic, or if the film is about some historical figure who does indeed have schizophrenia. But this is all case-by-case - and as someone who thought they were God, I am the god of this list and will make the final calls, even in cases that are extremely borderline. I will try to be fair, but also be inclusive of many different perspectives. If you get 1000 schizophrenic folks in a room, you'll get 1,000 different ways that symptoms manifest. So something may or may not resonate with me, that will be truer for someone else. Here is the clinical definition of Schizophrenia: DSM-V Diagnostic Criteria of Schizophrenia 295.90 (F20.9) A. Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1 -month period (or less if successfully treated). At least one of these must be (1 ), (2), or (3): 1. Delusions. 2. Hallucinations. 3. Disorganized speech (e.g., frequent derailment or incoherence). 4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. 5. Negative symptoms (i.e., diminished emotional expression or avolition). B. For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, level of functioning in one or more major areas, such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care, is markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset (or when the onset is in childhood or adolescence, there is a failure to achieve expected level of interpersonal, academic, or occupational functioning). C. Continuous signs of the disturbance persist for at least 6 months. This 6-month period must include at least 1 month of symptoms (or less if successfully treated) that meet Criterion A (i.e., active-phase symptoms) and may include periods of prodromal or residual symptoms. During these prodromal or residual periods, the signs of the disturbance may be manifested by only negative symptoms or by two or more symptoms listed in Criterion A present in an attenuated form (e.g., odd beliefs, unusual perceptual experiences). The real kicker here is the 6 month period - as most films are just a slice of life and not indicating that these have been ongoing issues. I am perhaps most flexible on the time element - as its going to be extremely difficult to pin this down for most all cases. I will probably ignore the time issue altogether - as its impossible to know whether someone is experiencing a "brief psychotic episode" vs actually has schizophrenia - and I'd far rather be more inclusive of even the brief episodes, then simply stick to the longterm clinical definition. But if you disagree with this assertion, then please do let me know (message me for any reason). If a character meets two of those, I will lean towards inclusion. If its a movie about a kid who talks to dogs, the kid will have to have one of the other symptoms as well. This is all subject to change, and if you disagree with my ruling - then please do message me and make your case - as I am 100% flexible on these things - but I've usually argued about it with myself for over an hour, so I'll usually have some solid evidence to back it up. The only other problem I might face in this is when psychosis is due to either drug use or delirium (usually alcohol withdrawl). I will keep these issues in mind (and have already done so, See: Lost in a Harem (1944)) - but I will know that that is yet another issue hanging over the head of this project that I must be aware of - as both can very easily mimic the schizo experience.

Haven't included films not specifically identified in photo montages such as during the opening credits or the review of Post War European cinema nor films mentioned in newspaper clipping text shown. 16. Films which Replicate Psychosis's icon

    Films which Replicate Psychosis

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Psychosis is a break from reality. It can take the form of audio or visual hallucinations, or delusions (believing things that aren't true... not in a "haha the world is flat" but more of a "I am Jesus reborn" sort of thinking). Psychosis is a primary hallmark of schizophrenia, but may also be present in certain cases of bipolar disorder or depression. A true psychotic break / episode is (at least for me) a terrifying experience, where you're not sure what is real or not - as you enter into a waking dream state where there's basically any rules to reality. Like thinking the walls are spying on you whilst shadow figures are surrounding you. It can feel just like a horror movie at times - that you're living. If you're curious to experience this yourself - then most "normal" folks are capable of experiencing psychosis after prolonged sleep deprivation -Usually after 24 hours - you'll at least get some smaller hallucinations (entering psychosis may take up to 72 hours of sleep deprivation though). This list will hopefully serve as a guide to films which reproduce the experience of psychosis - to give the rest of you a glimpse into the world which some of us live in 24/7. There will be an emphasis on paranoia and hallucinations. I expect there'll be a large number of horror movies, or duplicates from my other schizophrenia list project: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/schizophrenia+in+film/minkin/ All suggestions are welcome and will be added, but I am the brewmeister of the list, so all films will receive final vetting from me (or my team if I eventually get a group of us going). If you would like an explanation as to why a movie is on this list, then please see the "notes" on this list on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/minkin/list/films-which-replicate-psychosis/ Note: everything from Bug after in the list has not been vetted by me yet, so don't treat those as canon.

  25. Happiness's icon

    Happiness

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. PTP list Movies that deal explicitly with happiness in their narrative - fundamentally stories about people who explicitly pursue or live a happy life. These movies are not necessarily about happy characters nor they are comedies. Overall this list is about movies that discuss the nature of happiness, its representation in cinema or present us with the problem of how to live a more fulfilling and happy life. Many movies present us with a happy ending, specially in Hollywood, but the happiness that interests me here is the happiness that do not depend on the resolution of an objective dramatic conflict (family conciliation, love affair, revenge, achievements, etc), but the happiness that springs from an existential, spiritual, philosophical or intimate resolution. Another cluster of movies are those that deal ironically with happiness, as Agnès Varda's Le bonheur. For the purpose of size, this list does not consider formulaic comedy movies about "life lessons", like Yes with Jim Carry or Click with Adam Sandler.
