Pardon le Cinéma vol.2: 100 films à voir d'urgence, des classiques aux pépites

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Pardon the Cinema, vol. 2! The team of the first French podcast on cinema does it again with a new opus. New films, new classics to (re)discover, new nuggets lovingly unearthed, new great moments of the 7th art... But the objective is always the same: to wake up your screens with another cinema, an in-depth selection that travels across all continents and all genres, from 1907 to 2021, from Chile to Japan, from documentaries to action films... 100 unknown, forgotten or marginal films... to see urgently! "Pardon le Cinema" is Victor Bonnefoy (director, screenwriter and creator of the Youtube channel InThePanda), Sophie Grech (press officer and screenwriter), Marc Moquin (editor-in-chief of Revus & Corrigés), Simon Riaux (critic cinema in Le Cercle on Canal+ or on the Large Screen website), Arthur Cios (journalist for Konbini) and Alexis Roux (cinema journalist): a team that talks about cinema in an irresponsible but respectful atmosphere and brings together more than 100,000 listeners per month.
3. Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time's icon

Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 106:1. I compiled this list from many different polls, lists, and awards, using a weighted point system to rank the shorts. I'm defining short as any film with a runtime of 45 minutes or less. This list focuses more on animation than the Brief Encounters list. It includes many acclaimed animated shorts which are missing from Brief Encounters, most notably The Man Who Planted Trees and Ruka. Missing from IMDb: The Magic Fox (1982) (it would've been ranked #132)

From horror to romance, noir to slapstick, adventure to tragedy, epic to musical, western to new wave, all genres are represented in this wide-ranging compendium. Source
5. Entertainment Weekly's 100 Greatest Movies of All Time's icon

Entertainment Weekly's 100 Greatest Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 14:0. Entertainment Weekly's 100 Greatest Movies of All Time, a hardcover guide published in 1999 by Time-Life Inc. and written by senior editor Ty Burr, celebrated films that can't be forgotten, that "help us understand and define who we are." The final list was whittled down from a preliminary collection of 500 nominated choices, excluding short films, documentaries, or any movies from the previous five years (from 1994 onward). The list deliberately corrected the American Film Institute's most glaring omissions - Preston Sturges, Buster Keaton, and Ernst Lubitsch, and added some of the best foreign films - from Fellini, Truffaut, and Kurosawa. According to the book's introduction, the most represented male star was James Stewart (with five films); Cary Grant, Robert De Niro and Alec Guinness had four films each, and Janet Leigh had three films. The most represented director was Alfred Hitchcock (with four films), and there were three films each from Michael Curtiz, David Lean, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Billy Wilder. (The book also includes 25 additional films "too beloved to ignore." This list is here:

8. Musta Peili - horror film filmography's icon

Musta Peili - horror film filmography

Favs/dislikes: 8:0. Full (appr.) 800 title filmography from the classic Finnish horror film book. Mentioned to cover the most important titles from 1906 to 1985. The title order is original to the book, hence some year jumps. Still missing the titles that dont't have their own chapter, I'll be adding them next. Missing titles (not found from IMDb): - L'Homme qui rit (France, 1909)

Favs/dislikes: 26:1. n this 2005 book, author Alonso Duralde (arts and entertainment editor of The Advocate, the national gay and lesbian newsmagazine) presents a list of films every gay man should watch before considering his cultural education complete! From “The Apple” to “Xanadu”, “Auntie Mame” to “Zero Patience”, this list covers all the bases: Hollywood spectaculars, indie hits, cult faves, critical darlings and clamp classics.

16. Chaotic Cinema's icon

Chaotic Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. I came across an interesting, self-proclaimed Chaotic Cinema list on Letterboxd of over 2,600 surreal/experimental/cult/horror films and wanted to transport it here. But inputting all those films was an enormous task, and gigantic ICM lists are always so cumbersome to load and use. So, I compromised and only entered the films I haven't seen. Which initially amounted to just about half of them. This makes the list less useful to others, but it's certainly SOME use to other fans of this warped cinematic realm. If nothing else, you can gloat about whichever films you've seen and I haven't! Inputting this list also led to importing multiple films to the ICM database. But unfortunately, there was also a surprising number of films that don't even have IMDb pages: A Vessel, the Ideas Pass Through 2021 / AAA AAA 1978 / Artificial Light x20 1969 / Atomic Bombs on the Planet Earth 2012 / Avant Coureur/Raster Relief 1983 / Chasse des Touches 1959 / Cinema Is a Mosaic Made of Time 1984 / Circumcision of Participant Observation 2013 / Conditions 2014 / Dead Dance 2009 / Diignus Vindice Nodus 1982 / Double 2001, a.k.a. Bunshin / Earth Pulse 1975 / Embodiment of Darkness 2018 / Epiphany 1984 / Excavations 1979 / Forbidden Symmetries 2014 / Geflecht 1976 / General Motors 1976 / Gewebe 1976 / He Walked Away 2006 / Highbushes Burning 2018 / Hollis Well 2012 / Horror Film 1 1971 / I Am Making Art 1971 / I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art 1971 / Intercourse With... 1978 / Lanzarote 2014 / Levitation 1972 / Light of the Body 2004 / Love Reinvented 1979, a.k.a. L'Amour Réinventé / Magic Mirror 2013 / Measures of Volatility 1979 / Moonblack 1968 / My Very Beautiful Movie 1974 / Number Two 2019 / Paul Sharits Interview with Gerard O'Grady 1976 / Performance of Video Imaging Tools 1970-1978 (a compilation of 17 video clips by various directors) / Phenomenon 2019 / Pictures of the Lost 1978 / Precession of the Simulacra 1992 / Primarily Speaking 1983 / Primary Time 1974 / Quarry 2015 / R-G-B 1974 / Relation in Time 1977 / Reverberlin 2006 / Scan Processor Studies 1973 / Script 1974 / Set of Co-incidence 1974 / Songs for Synthesized Soprano 1990 / Spinout 1983 / Teaching a Plant the Alphabet 1972 / Ten Years in the Sun 2015 / The 92 Faces of Peter Greenaway 2002 / The Dream of the Little Dancing Men 1997 / The Extinct Suite 2017 / The Loner 1980 / The Matter Propounded, of Its Possibility and Impossibility, Treated in Four Parts 2011 / The Poacher Woman of the Montafon 2011 / The Seismic Form 2020 / Theme Song 1973 / U-Barn 1968 / Unbalance 2006 / Up to and Including Her Limits 1976 / Weird Weird Movie Kids Do Not Watch the Movie 2013 / Why Do Things Get in a Muddle? (Come On Petunia) 1984 / Wilderness Series 2016 I'm going to create IMDb pages for as many of these films as my patience allows -- we'll see how I do. I believe I'm up to 145 adds now. I'll delete titles from the above block of text as I add them to ICM. I continue to remove films that I see. The list initially was 1,108 films but is much smaller now. But there's an extra wrinkle: The Letterboxd user continues to expand the list, so I'm adding films as well as subtracting them. PS Two substantial misgivings about this list: 1) Too many trashy horror movies included, just because they're gory or shocking. 2) The list's creator has a creepy fetish about arty women in film. Especially Tilda Swinton -- he runs Facebook pages about her and apparently hoards hundreds of photos of her. And this kink infects the list, which has loads of marginal, female-directed films and, of course, extra Swinton films. He's fixated on Cate Blanchett too.
17. Re/Search's Incredibly Strange Films's icon

Re/Search's Incredibly Strange Films

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. "Incredibly Strange Films" was the 10th in Re/Search's series of publications about underground culture, published in 1986 and curated by V. Vale and Andrea Juno. The book, which included essays and interviews to many protagonists of the B-movie scene, like Russ Meyer and Doris Wishman, included the following list of “Favorite films” as chosen by guest editors Jim Morton and Boyd Rice. The identification of some of the movies is dubious: They are listed only by title and year, and there are many inaccuracies and typos in the source. The following titles do not appear to be in IMDB: "The Great Hunting 1984", "Mr. Rellik (drivers’ ed film)", "The Punishment of Anne", and "Safety in the Shop". Any information about those titles is welcome. I also assumed that “Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1969)” was Al Adamson's version from 1971, but it might be Jesus Franco's movie from 1972.
18. Svengoolie on Me-TV's icon

Svengoolie on Me-TV

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Svengoolie is a horror host who brings classic horror / sci-fi / comedy films each week to viewers on the channel Me-TV. Beginning in1970 with host Jerry G. Bishop, the show has been hosted by Rich Koz, first as the "Son of Svengoolie" and later just plain ole "Svengoolie". This is a list of Svengoolie episodes that have aired on the Me-TV network (as I don't have a good source for pre-MeTV episodes).
