  1. Autostraddle 100 Best Lesbian Movies Of All Time's icon

Autostraddle 100 Best Lesbian Movies Of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 0:1. Autostraddle's selection of the best 100 movies featuring lesbian, queer, or bisexual women.
  2. Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time's icon

Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time

Favs/dislikes: 9:1. Films aimed at lesbian, bisexual and queer women have never exactly been noted for their universal excellence. Hollywood is a notoriously sexist machine and it’s hard enough to get a solid film about women made, let alone a solid film about women who prefer the company of other women. While unprecedented progress is being made on television, film lags sadly behind, offering few, if any, portrayals of LGBTQ women. The term “lesbian movies” is used in the headline because that is the most popular search term for people looking for films about women who like other women, but these movies feature women of all sexual orientations besides “straight.”

AfterElton.com's Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies

Favs/dislikes: 14:0. Voted on by readers of AfterElton.com in 2012. This list actually combines their two lists, the "Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies" and then "The 25 Greatest Gay Documentaries", thus a total of 125 films.
  4. Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2020)'s icon

Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2020)

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. "The goal with this list was to create a canon of Lesbian+ film that honors all the different types of work worthy of viewing. There are films that are simply fun for a casual night in, there are deeply thought-provoking films, and there are films that are mostly just here to turn you on. This list was created through a rigorous multi-step process that involved a lot of watching, a lot of voting, and a lot of weighing factors often ignored on mainstream film lists. It was important to us that we not take into account any metric voted on by institutions composed mostly of cis straight white men. While it’s impressive when a film about queer women or nonbinary people manages to get Oscar nominations or a high Rotten Tomatoes score, the films that get those recognitions are not often made by us or specifically for us. This list does not include films about trans men (e.g. By Hook or By Crook, Tomboy), films about trans women exclusively interested in men (e.g. Tangerine, A Fantastic Woman), films based on queer books that had their explicit queerness removed (e.g. The Color Purple, Fried Green Tomatoes), or films where the queerness is just subtext (e.g. A League of Their Own, Rebecca). This list also doesn’t include short films, documentaries, or porn — with a handful of exceptions where length/genre lines were blurred." Note: This version of the list was published in early 2020. The list has since been updated again but I'll be keeping this version up for reference. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.

  7. Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time's icon

Autostraddle's Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Curating a ranked list of the best lesbian movies (and otherwise queer movies) of all time was not easy. It involved some rounds of nominations and voting from our own team members, Riese watching so many lesbian movies in such a short period of time that she lost her overall ability to determine “good” from “bad,” a surveyance of other lists and reading a ton of movie reviews to come up with the most objective list possible. Note: This list was an updated version from the other same lists on this site. Autostraddle has since rehauled the list so completely I've made it into a newer, separate list. I've kept this list up despite being outdated in case anyone is curious as to what it used to be. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.
  8. Best Lesbian Flicks's icon

    Best Lesbian Flicks

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. The best in queer lady cinema - nothing like Room in Rome or that other cheap crap. Not to say there's no trashy stuff here, but it's special and smart trashy stuff. I can only rank the movies when I am on my PC, so new additions below Carol (really, Carol is not a great movie, I should not even include it here) might get ranked higher when I get round to it. The Handmaiden is awful and I absolutely can't recommend it to anyone but teenage boys. Same goes for everything but the first 20-30 minutes of Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It's not a great movie and the sex scene is not only unrealistic but just plain bad. Even bad porn is better because at least it doesn't pretend to be art. Blockers I normally wouldn't include because the lesbian story line doesn't take up much space, but gets an honorary mention because it is surprisingly good and funny. I only add movies I have watched. If you think I have missed a great movie, please send me a pm! :)

Huffington Post's LGBT Pride Films 2013: The Best Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Movies to Celebrate

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Pride is here and if the Summer heat is a little too much for you to stand outside and wave as the parade crawls by, don't worry, you can still celebrate in front of your air conditioning with these gay film classics. We've highlighted over 40 films that we feel represent the best of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender cinema (and no there's no "Brokeback Mountain" or "How to Survive a Plague" because those they're great, these are supposed to be UPLIFTING feel-good movies for Pride).
  14. Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies's icon

    Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. This is a (non-exhaustive) list of movies that feature lesbian, bisexual, or queer women. I've tried to focus on movies that have explicitly queer women but have included some titles where the subtext has been considered noteworthy. Movies focused on trans men or straight trans women will not be included. I made this list for my own reference but decided to make it public in case someone else wants to dive into lesbian cinema. Please note that this is not intended to be a list of good lesbian films. A significant percentage of the movies are bad, contain harmful stereotypes, or are otherwise a poor representation of the community. If you don't want to waste time on those films I suggest you look to one of the other lesbian-related lists on this site. Leave a comment if you feel I've missed any movies that should be added!

  18. Queer/Art/Film's icon

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Founded in June 2009, Queer/Art/Film is a New York film series where each month they invite one of the city’s homosexual artists to pick a film that has most inspired them, and present it to an audience. Some films are missing, as they are not classified by IMDb as films.
  19. The BFI 30 Best LGBT Films of All Time's icon

The BFI 30 Best LGBT Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. To mark the 30th anniversary of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, BFI is delighted to announce the Top 30 LGBT Films of All Time in the first major critical survey of LGBT films. Over 100 film experts including critics, writers and programmers such as Joanna Hogg, Mark Cousins, Peter Strickland, Richard Dyer, Nick James and Laura Mulvey, as well as past and present BFI Flare programmers, have voted the Top 30 LGBT Films of All Time. The poll’s results represent 84 years of cinema and 12 countries, from countries including Thailand, Japan, Sweden and Spain, as well as films that showed at BFI Flare such as Orlando (1992), Beautiful Thing (1996), Weekend (2011) and Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013).
  20. The Criterion Collection: Out at Criterion's icon

The Criterion Collection: Out at Criterion

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. In 1961, Basil Dearden’s Victim became the first mainstream English-language drama to feature a sympathetic homosexual protagonist, played by matinee idol Dirk Bogarde. In 2011, Andrew Haigh’s boy-meets-boy romance Weekend defied expectations to become a crossover art-house hit. The fact that, fifty years after Victim, Weekend is also considered groundbreaking is evidence of how far cinema may still have to go in terms of gay representation. But between these two revelatory films, there have been plenty of other important and entertaining ones made about gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, and several of them are available in the Criterion Collection, including works by trailblazers like Robert Epstein, Derek Jarman, and Gus van Sant.
