5. CFB's 100 Important Directors of Animated Short Films's icon

CFB's 100 Important Directors of Animated Short Films

Favs/dislikes: 36:1. 100 Important Directors of Animated Short Films: Background This list of 100 important directors of animated short films was assembled in late 2008 to serve as a complement to “Brief Encounters,” a proposed list of 250 great short films (both animated and live-action) which was to be developed by the folks at the They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? website. Unfortunately, that 250-film list is in limbo, leaving our list without a home. The “100 Important Directors of Animated Short Films” list is not intended to be comprehensive. These are simply 100 directors whom we feel are important and deserving of increased recognition by film lovers. For each director, we selected three “highly recommended” movies. In addition, we included a category of “TSPDT 250 Greatest Shorts” to highlight any of these directors’ films which were tentatively slated to place on the abandoned Brief Encounters list. This project was facilitated by Lee Price (lee-109) on the IMDb Classic Film message board. Project team: Lee Price, Robert Reynolds (Illtdesq), Jorge Didaco (jdidaco), Bill Kamberger (bkamberger), and Rob Tomshany (RobT-2), with additional input from animation fans on the IMDb Classic Film message board.

    One Hundred Great Documentaries (OUP)

Favs/dislikes: 18:0. Patricia Aufderheide's list from 'Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction' - part of the highly regarded series from Oxford University Press. "These documentaries have been widely seen and discussed, and have been in many cases at the center of controversies; in other cases they have provided valuable teaching resources. They are all accessible for renting or buying for your private collection. You can use the index in this book and other books mentioned in the references, imdb.com, your local library, Netflix, Google, and the Library of Congress to find out more about why these films have attracted attention and esteem. Viewing this collection will set you up nicely with a context to watch your latest favorite, argue with the list, and build your own top one hundred." 10. Beltesassar's Short Animation Festival's icon

    Beltesassar's Short Animation Festival

Favs/dislikes: 11:0. Back in 2007, a professor in the Netherlands used an Azureus torrent press to share 220 short animated films – 30 GB – with the world. Beltesassar's Short Animation Festival (named after the prof himself) is an incredible collection of short animations from all over the globe dating back to 1911. While this isn't a political collection per se, there are political pieces peppered throughout, and the very nature of putting this together and making it available through file sharing is political in itself. http://artthreat.net/2007/05/beltesassar-shares-10-gigs-of-animated-shorts-in-new-online-festival/ Note: Some short movies don't appear in icheckmovies and/or IMDb: Play (2003), by Matt Abbiss (Vol.3) Russian Roulette, episode of the Angry Kid short series by Darren Walsh (Vol.5) Línea 145 (1972-1991), series (Vol.5) The Cags (2005), short by Alexei Petrov (Vol.9) Good song (2004), videoclip by David Shrigley (Vol.9) Color Dream no.246 (2006), by Michael Theodore (Vol.9) Claymation Comedy of Horrors (1991), a prime time TV special by Will Vinton (Vol.11) Reet Petite (1986), videoclip by Giblets Studio (Vol.11) Trigger Happy (1997), by Jeffrey Noyes Scher (Vol.13) Le peuple de l'eau (1992), by Paul Driessen (Vol.13) This Wonderful Life (2003), by Liam Kemp (Vol.13) Giant Steps (2001), by Michal Levy (Vol.14) Spin (2002), by Hoogerbrugge (Vol.15) The Fireplace (Vol.15) The Animated Heavy Metal Parking Lot, by Leslie Supnet (Vol.16) Copying is not theft (2009), by Nina Paley (Vol.16) Skazki Lesa (1997), by Elena Petkevich (Vol.17) Cycles (2010), by Cyriak (Vol.17) 1 - 34 : Vol.1 35 - 45 : Vol.2 46 - 54: Vol.3 55 - 63: Vol.4 64 - 86: Vol.5 87 - 97: Vol.6 98 - 115: Vol.7 116 - 137: Vol.8 138 - 156: Vol.9 157 - 173: Vol.10 174 - 187: Vol.11 188 - 206: Vol.12 207 - 221: Vol.13 222 - 244: Vol.14 245 - 265: Vol.15 266 - 284: Vol.16 285 - 298: Vol.17

Around the World in 80 Films (OUP)

Favs/dislikes: 8:0. Michael Wood's list from 'Film: A Very Short Introduction' - part of the highly regarded series from Oxford University Press. "The following list is not arbitrary, since there is substantial agreement about the importance of these works. But it leaves out a large number of very good films, and I offer it to readers only as a set of suggestions, chances of exciting journeys in the world of cinema and the cinema of the world."

  15. Short films Watchlist's icon

    Short films Watchlist

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. A personal list with relatively short films (under 80 minutes) on official lists, that seem to be available online and in many cases have YouTube links in the comments on ICM. For that purpose I made the list public and will try to add recent links to anything I come across for other users to enjoy. Keep in mind that this is no best of as I haven't even seen these films. Nor does it aim to be complete since for practical purposes I delete movies as soon as I've seen them. But feel free to check some short movies while they're here ;-) That means that in the end there will only be a handful of 80 minutes movies left. Not exactly shorts, I know. But then the list will have fulfilled it's purpose. Happy checking! 20. KORT!'s icon

    KORT!

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. KORT! ("short" in Dutch) gives a mix of both beginners/young and more experienced/established screenwriters/filmmakers the chance to make short (stand-alone) fiction films. The films will be screened at the Dutch Film Festival, then online and a year later on television during the so-called evening of the short film. The NTR (a Dutch public broadcaster), the Dutch Film Fund, the Dutch Cultural Broadcasting Fund and the Co-production Fund Domestic Broadcasting facilitate the production of these short fiction films. Shorts remarkably not included in the IMDb: Rat (Roel Boorsma & Berend Boorsma) Salt-battle (Ron Termaat) 11:59 (Johan Kramer) Dialoogoefening (Esther Rots) De laatste dag (Saskia Diesing) Ruwe honing (Annick Vroom) Salto Mortale (Vincent Schuurman)
