Christian Marclay's The Clock
Favs/dislikes: 2:0. The Clock (2010) is an art installation by video artist Christian Marclay. It is a looped 24-hour video supercut (montage of scenes from film and television) that feature clocks or timepieces. The artwork itself functions as a clock: its presentation is synchronized with the local time, resulting in the time shown in a scene being the actual time. Missing in IMDB: How a Watch Works (1949) What Makes a Fine Watch Fine? (1947) San Francisco: Market Street and Ferryboats (1937) Bulova Clipper Conquers Niagara Falls (1956) under construction https://theclock.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline -

Robert Sklar's Film: An International History
Favs/dislikes: 4:0. "[The Book] presents the entire history of motion pictures, from pre-cinema to the present. Providing a complete analysis of the principal films, directors, and national cinemas, it supplies a thorough grounding in the social, economic, and political circumstances critical to an understanding of film as both art and industry." Missing: Childhood Rivalry in Bali and New Guinea (1952) - Margaret Mead & Gregory Bateson Shang hai zhan zheng (1912) - unknown Workers' Newsreel—Unemployment Special (1931) - Robert Del Duca and Leo Seltzer -
James Monaco's How to Read a Film
Favs/dislikes: 15:0. "Monaco once again looks at film from many vantage points, as both art and craft, sensibility and science, tradition and technology. After examining film's close relation to other narrative media such as the novel, painting, photography, television, and even music, the book discusses the elements necessary to understand how films convey meaning, and, more importantly, how we can best discern all that a film is attempting to communicate." Mark Cousins' The Story of Film (Book)
Favs/dislikes: 11:0. "Film critic, producer, and presenter Mark Cousins' history shows how filmmakers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other." Beyond the Canon's Films Deserving Greater Attention
Favs/dislikes: 35:0. "Beyond the Canon is essentially a greatest films poll, only without the greatest films. I challenged a number of dedicated film-lovers – critics, bloggers, filmmakers, IMDbers; professional, amateur, and in-between – to select up to 100 films that they believed to have been under-represented by film history, that meant more to them than the established, well-exposed classics." - Iain Stott, The One-Line Review -

François Truffaut's Le Plaisir des Yeux
Favs/dislikes: 17:0. "This book is a collection of essays, some insightful, some brief "fillers." Together it would be hard to rate the grouping as 5-stars, save for a sentimental attachment to Truffaut's work. The book is not just the reflections of the director upon his own work. Nor is it only French cinema. One essay is entitled "The Renaissance of American cinema," and in other essays he looks at the work of Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Orson Wells, and Charlie Chaplin. Naturally he also looks at the famous French directors, from Jean Cocteau, Jean Renoir and the one man who was so responsible for saving the earlier French works, Henri Langlois. A major section of the book is devoted to essays that relate to the impact of literature on the cinema." -
