  1. 20/20 Award Best Cinematography's icon

    20/20 Award Best Cinematography

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. From the website: "The 20/20 Awards uses the advantage of time and perspective to annually re-evaluate the Oscars from 20 years prior. Utilizing the benefit of hindsight, a voting body of film industry professionals from around the world carefully elects either new or previous nominees, and hosts a live awards ceremony, designed to both honor and offer new perspective with fresh commentary on the impact of this body of work on cinema itself, and its influence on our culture. Every year since 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes excellence in the film industry through the Academy Awards®, bestowing honors upon films, directors, actors, screenwriters, and technical artists who created outstanding art in cinema. The awards are given in the spring, honoring those films released in the previous calendar year. However, as with all annual award ceremonies, the Academy Awards® lack two of history’s most reliable criteria for appraising artistic merit: time and perspective. By bestowing awards on film-work released merely the year before, errant factors often come into play such as fleeting trends, industry politics, favoritism, marketing campaigns and short term current events that translate little out of context. Sifting through the list of Academy Award winners over the decades reveals a multitude of films, directors, screenplays, performances, musical scores and other contributions that have not stood well against the cold scrutiny of time. Meanwhile, many neglected films have proved to be far more influential to the medium, continuing to resonate with modern audiences and critics far more than many of the Oscar winning films. The 20/20 Awards offer a unique alternative to prevailing award shows, emphasizing the test of time as the key criterion by which films and filmmakers should be honored. Looking back twenty years affords voters an insight free from industry insiderism and the contemporary zeitgeist." This is the list of best cinematography winners, as selected by The 20/20 Awards.

  15. Richard Brody's The Best Movie Performances of the 21st Century's icon

Richard Brody's The Best Movie Performances of the 21st Century

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. The film performances of the beginning of the twenty-first century are a product of the drastic transformations that have taken place in moviemaking in recent decades, as a new generation of directors, both in Hollywood and outside of it, has managed to invent modes of moviemaking capable of adapting to unprecedented crises in the industry. The competition from television (“prestige” or otherwise), the top-heavy expansion of blockbuster franchises, and the rise of streaming platforms have led to a decline in studio movie production. As a result, independent producers have grown significantly in prominence and power, and their financing has had a liberating effect on directors, and, by extension, on actors: working largely with modest budgets (yet occasionally with larger ones than studios would provide), filmmakers have been able to take greater risks and make more unusual films—and to develop new methods of performance with actors whose artistry closely fits their own.

  17. Sarah Kaufman's 31 Best Dance Scenes in Movies's icon

Sarah Kaufman's 31 Best Dance Scenes in Movies

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Dance critic Sarah Kaufman writes: “What do dance scenes add to a movie? Unspeakable bliss, for starters. Dancing starts when dialogue fails. When lovers need to move beyond conversation, when conflicts boil past negotiation, when joy can’t be expressed in any other way than by leaping into the air on a trumpeter’s high note. With the rise of movie musicals in the early part of the 20th century, dancing moved easily from stage to screen, becoming bigger, more potent, ever more spectacular — and a lasting love affair with the moviegoing public was born. It’s still going on: Witness the mainstream success of “La La Land,” a film in the golden age mold. I also had to set some rules for this list: I considered specific dance scenes, not the quality of entire movies. I didn’t include documentaries or foreign films; no “Pina,” no “Mad Hot Ballroom.” With matchless artists in movement, music and choreography, the 1940s and ’50s dominate my choices, but even those aren’t exhaustive. I settled on the era’s best and moved on. I handicapped Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, limiting them to just one dance (it’s my No. 1, the best of the best) from all the jewels in their 10 films together, because if I didn’t, they’d eat the list. Our vast cinematic history is studded with marvelous dancing, and one has to draw the line somewhere.”
