1. 50 Checks is Too Damn Popular's icon

50 Checks is Too Damn Popular

Favs/dislikes: 1:1. My list of favorite films with <50 checks for the January 2021 icmforum poll.
2. 550 films for 500 films less than 400 checks's icon

550 films for 500 films less than 400 checks

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. My picks for the icmforum's 500<400 list; top 110 films are in preferential order, the rest chronological.
3. Andy Hardy's icon

Andy Hardy

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. MGM's Andy Hardy series made a huge star out of lead Mickey Rooney, who played the eponymous teenager in all 16 films. Lewis Stone co-starred as his gruff but loving father Judge Hardy in all but the first and last of the series, with Fay Holden playing his mother in all but the first, and several other actors including Judy Garland appearing in multiple installments.
4. Classic American Serials's icon

Classic American Serials

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. A chronological listing of extant American serials made from the silent era through the 1950s. I am only including titles that exist complete, or for which there is enough material to provide at least the minimal "serial experience" , such as the first film listed, The Perils of Pauline which was originally 20 reels but is known to exist now only in a 9-reel reissue version. Some of these titles aren't commercially available at the moment however.
5. Cradle of Civilization: Favorite films from the Middle East's icon

Cradle of Civilization: Favorite films from the Middle East

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. My favorite films from the Middle East, for the 2018 icm poll. Countries included are Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey; while there are other countries that produce films in the region, I haven't yet seen anything to make the list from any of them. Top 50 films are ranked, the rest listed in chronological order.
6. Crystal Simorgh Award Winners's icon

Crystal Simorgh Award Winners

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Winners of the Crystal Simorgh, the top award of the Fajr Film Festival, held annually in Tehran since 1982. This is the top film award give in Iran to domestic films - the award was first given in 1986, no winners were announced for 1994 or 2012, and two films tied for 2014. List is in chronological order according to the award history and may not match IMDb/ICM dates exactly.
7. Dr. Mabuse: elf Bilder unserer Zeit's icon

Dr. Mabuse: elf Bilder unserer Zeit

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. The eleven German productions - or co-productions - made between 1922 and 1990 about the eponymous criminal mastermind of novelist Norbert Jacques. The first four were directed by Fritz Lang, with the third a French-language alternate version of the third; the last film, from French director Claude Chabrol, is in English but was shot in Berlin with a mostly German cast. Films are listed in original release order.
8. Everything But the Kitchen Sink's icon

Everything But the Kitchen Sink

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Movies that are a little bit - or a lot - of everything. "Overstuffed" films might be another way to put it - "extravagant". Some of these are great films - some are anything but - but what they have in common is a desire to go well beyond the ordinary and the safe.
9. Favorite African Films's icon

Favorite African Films

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. My favorite films from Africa, for the icmforum poll, 2018. I am not generally including films from non-African directors or films that are not primarily of African origin. UPDATE 2023. Top 30 ranked.
10. Favorite Feature Directorial Debuts's icon

11. Favorite Short Films's icon

Favorite Short Films

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Top 75 in order, the rest listed chronologically.
12. Film Noir Everywhere Everywhen's icon

Film Noir Everywhere Everywhen

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. My favorite films noir. I'm of the belief that noir - indefinable and elusive as it is - exists throughout most of film history, and in most countries, so if you're a traditionalist who thinks it has to be American, b/w, and extends only from The Maltese Falcon in 1941 until Touch of Evil in 1958... this list is not for you. Top 65 titles ranked, thereafter in chronological order.
13. Gawad Urian Best Film Award's icon

Gawad Urian Best Film Award

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. The Best Picture award given every year since 1976 by Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (Filipino Film Critics). The 2002, 2003, and 2004 awards each had two winners.

17. Los Angeles Plays Itself Some More's icon

Los Angeles Plays Itself Some More

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. More Los Angeles films for an imagined sequel to Thom Andersen's masterpiece - listed in chronological order.
18. Luchador films's icon

Luchador films

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. A list of all Mexican luchador films that I can find, ordered by release year. I am not an expert in the area, but there seem to be few comprehensive lists around, and none on this site, so I added my own. Feel free to suggest additions/corrections!
19. Michael Shayne series's icon

Michael Shayne series

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. All the films in the two series - the low budget Fox films with Lloyd Nolan (1-7) and the even lower budgeted PRC films with Hugh Beaumont as Brett Halliday's wisecracking, semi-comic private eye.
20. Philo Vance's icon

Philo Vance

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. The Philo Vance series, based on a character created by S.S. Van Dine, was one of the first in a very popular genre or subgenre in Hollywood during the Depression era - the amateur detective, usually a fashionable and wealthy man who doesn't need to pursue a career and just solves crimes for fun. See also the Lone Wolf and Falcon series, and for a twist, the Thin Man films in which the solitary male becomes a couple. Apart from the Thin Man, most of these series were low-budget b-pictures running 55-75 minutes, and in most cases the lead role changed hands over time as the originator of it got bored, or got to be a bigger star. Philo Vance is no exception, and he is played by in succession William Powell (films 1-3 and 5) Basil Rathbone (4) Warren William (6, 11) Paul Lukas (7) Edmund Lowe (8) Wilfrid Hyde-White (9) Grant Richards (10) James Stephenson (12) William Wright (13) Alan Curtis (14-15) NOTE: The Scarab Murder Case, the only British-produced film in the series, is considered a lost film but I have included it for completion's sake.
21. The Ringer's The 50 Best Rom-Coms's icon

The Ringer's The 50 Best Rom-Coms

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. As chosen by the staff of The Ringer, April 2022.
22. The Wonderfully Terrible's icon

The Wonderfully Terrible

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Or, bad movies I love. I've loved schlock since the 80s and going to b-movie fests, and I don't really like any of the other lists I see here, so I'm creating my own. This is heavily sf-fantasy oriented as that's where my bad movie love developed and mostly still lurks. All in chronological order as I think it's silly to rank these, though I will say I have a special fondness for Ed Wood films and Manos.
23. Underrated is a weasel word's icon

Underrated is a weasel word

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Films that yours truly, in His Infinite Wisdom, thinks aren't as beloved by the masses as they should be. Top 50 ranked, the rest in chronological order.
24. UnOfficially Fabulous Films's icon

UnOfficially Fabulous Films

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Favorite films on 0 Official lists. First 101 ranked, then in chronological order.
