This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria.

The list is divided into 5 sections:
I. Narrative Films
Hollywood Genres (with an emphasis on the classical studio era)
II. Non-Fiction Films
III. Animated Films
IV. Experimental/Avant-garde/Underground Films
V. Single-channel Video

According to the list source, this section is incomplete (i.e. they're planning to expand it in the future). This section focuses mostly on short films. Only 8 of them are feature-length.

3 of the list items are "A ___ cartoon" (Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker). This means you have to watch at least one, but it's not important which one. On this list I included only the most acclaimed cartoon from each series.

The list includes only the "Mirror People" segment of Fantastic Animation Festival.
