Wong Kar-Wai might be my favorite director. I finished watching nearly every film he was involved in chronological order recently and it was an interesting experiment because I got to see a ton of the films he worked on before becoming a director as well as how different the films he produces can be versus the films he directs himself. For the most part I wasn't too interested in the films he didn't direct himself except for 1987's Final Victory, 2012's Touch of the Light, 1998's First Love: Litter on the Breeze. I would probably rate all of these a 7/10 on my personal scale.

As for the films he did direct, I think the following are masterpieces:

In the Mood for Love (2000)
Chungking Express (1994)
Days of Being Wild (1990)
Happy Together (1997)

With his second feature, Days of Being Wild, he presented a personal style which has been on display throughout every film he has directed since. Many of his films have simplified plots but their tone and feel are extremely sophisticated. He has also created or developed many stylistic camera techniques that I haven't seen anywhere else before. His films are beautiful and thoughtful and his characters feel sympathetic and real. I look forward to seeing many more films by Wong.

Recently, I decided to go through Wong Kar-Wai's films in chronological order, including the films he wrote screenplays for before becoming a director himself. I just wanted to say that if anyone else ever decides to check out any of these early films, they should start with Final Victory (Zui hou shoeing li, 1987.) This is probably his first decent film. Before this, they are pretty disposable.
