I watched it without knowing what was awaiting me, assuming it to be a spin-off or remake of the old Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser and so I had pretty low expectations. It had some good parts and in my opinion never reached complete boredom levels, at least. I do have many complaints about the movie though. tl;dr version after long rant.
One big problem to me was that none of the characters were particularly developped. I didn't feel the main male character (Nick?)'s supposed development. It wouldn't be a huge deal if
the ending didn't heavily rely on him "realizing the good in him". No, he still felt like a selfish jerk to me at the end.
. He was also extremely annoying throughout. I thought the mummy herself was the most relatable character, and the best parts of the movie is when she beats the crap out of Nick.
Another major issue is that it felt like they threw way too many different elements in there. Hallucinations, possession, a magic dagger, zombie-esque hordes, ghost-like apparition, mind-controlling spiders, AND DR. JEKYLL as a monster-researcher. They're obviously trying to tie a bunch of monsters together but this was just too disconnected from the main plot.
Lastly, the mummy herself. Don't get me wrong, she looked cool, her design was creative and the actress was right for the part. But does she have to be an erotic mummy, seriously? Kissing people to death, constantly making sexy faces at Nick and sitting on people suggestively when about to sacrifice them to Seth. If they want to make a sexy-mummy movie, ok, whatever, indulge in your mummy-fetish. But this was intended as an action/horror movie so it was just really distracting and unnecessary.
tl;dr: main character annoying, too many elements thrown in & mummy was hard to take seriously because of emphasized sex appeal.
Utter pile of crap. Everything is boring and predictable and if you think the action is "fantastic", you need to get out more. Running, running, running, bit of fist fighting, running, running and more running. Zzzzzzz. They can't even make decent popcorn movies now. Meh
Starts off pretty good but then quickly gets more and more ridiculous as our hero turns into a mumbling hallucinating idiot. I have a feeling Tom Cruise read the script and said that he didn't just want to play an action hero, so they brought in more screenwriters to give his character all that curse s**t. Vail's ghost really reminded me of Pascow from Pet Sematary. Russell Crowe as dr. Jekyll was the final nail in the coffin for me. I think that's when I just gave up on the movie.
Tom Cruise is so bad in this that you suddenly appreciate Brendan Fraser. I would rather see the three movies with him while I'm sitting on a bed of nails than to watch this again.
It's a pretty bland action movie to be honest. It doesn't even really qualify as a true popcorn flick because the action scenes and fights are just not up to par. I kept waiting for a climatic battle and then before you know it the movie ends. It's different enough from the original Mummy series but now it looks like this is just the beginning of a new series of the Mummy/Van Helsing/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen kind of mash-up. No thanks, seen it all before.
I honestly thought that "Dr. Jekyll" was just some clever alias and I facepalmed when I found out it's the actual character.
I expected something else but it makes sense as the first of the Dark Universe instalment.
I love Tom but I just don't think he was right for the part somehow.
Not a big fan of these type of pictures but it just doesn't work. A bit boring, constant CGI and the wrong movie for Cruise. The freefall scene with the airplane was great though
The first 15minutes were so good. I though it was gonna be a action/adventure film with lots of comedy between Cruise and Johnson. It all went downhill from there.. The comedy was gone and it went Dark and stupid... with the amazing cast and sourcematerial, you should think they could do much better.. to bad this movie came first. I was exited about the Dark universe upcoming movies
This is no where near as bad as what the critics are saying. The action is fantastic, cgi is great, nice horror elements, even a bit of comedy... Mr Cruise as entertaining as ever.
Better than some of the derivative comic book movies which seem to get outstanding scores for some reason.
As bad as what the critics are saying? Hell YES!! A big olĀ“mess even the cgi are not that great (I've seen much better, hell we have all seen much better cgi than this). This is what happens wen your juggling too many balls at the same time (trying to re-open the Dark Universe, Dr. Jekyll, Dracula what not, this all "I have a VG I'm better than you bs flying around the movie, trying to be funny, wen there's not need to be funny at all. P.S All movie studios, stop trying to be Marvel. Marvel movies are funny because it works pretty well in the Marvel Universe, it did not work here or in the last POS SW movie). You end up with a cr@p movie.

It's exactly as bad as critics are saying, great cgi and action scenes do not make up for the terrible storyline.BadFluffy

It's not as bad as the critics are saying, but it's not good either -- not as enjoyable as the usual kind of big summer movies the critics slag off.Earring72
