I went into this movie with one thing in mind: Sony hired Jon Watts to direct Spiderman because of this movie.
Why? it seems like an odd choice. I was expecting something of a campy movie. Jon Watts has a background with Onion News and is no stranger to comedy. But this movie is not a comedy, it is a small and honest thriller. It's a slow movie that couldve been condensed into a 30 minute short film, it alright.
I think the real reason Watts was hired was because of how realistic he was able to write and direct these kids. They are written more realistically than any kid i've ever seen in a movie. They think themselves to be smart and brave, but arent really. They dont know how a gun works or how a car works,so when they figure this stuff out it is slow and natural. They are naive and think themselves trouble makers but can't fathom doing anything worse than running away from home. These kids feel real.
Kevin Bacon is also great at the shady sheriff. There is just enough given about his background to get an idea if he is good or bad, but since this is a movie from the perspective of kids, we dont know his whole story.
So if you are curious about Jon Watts, definately check this out. I dont know any of his other movies and frankly this wasnt enough to make me seek him out, but it was well worth the viewing.

I actually really liked the kids (I don't generally like children) and i thought they gave a wonderful performance! Still curious about the ending though, I hope there's a sequel, not because I liked this one very much but because I want to know what happens next. 9 years 5 months ago -
