Great visual style as always. However, there were too many plot points brought up that were never resolved or even addressed later. (Sophie's mother, the actual war etc.) What we end up with is a movie that's pretty to look at, but not very engaging as a cohesive story. 7.5/10Siskoid
I believe I've got the consensual opinion. Miyazaki creates a gorgeous an inventive world, full of surprises and whimsy, but the film stumbles in the last minutes as everything is magically resolved in a very short time span indeed, even the stuff you didn't know what a plot thread (the missing prince). It really feels like, oops, just ran out of time, everybody be happy, yay! It doesn't undo the preceding two hours, mind you, as the oddness and visuals create plenty of memorable moments and images. The film often seems more symbolic than anything and is rife for literary and psychological analysis. The girl who believes herself an ugly "unwanted" being turned into a crone, the bipolar wizard losing his humanity, the child apprenticed forced into premature adulthood... Of course, the whiny fire demon Calcifer kind of steals the show, but what can you do? He's adorable.grit
I did pay attention, but certain points are indeed a bit confusing at first watch. Especially the last quarter of the movie just lacks the magic the other 75% hasruesailmana
I love the book! The film however, is a bit too weird. I like it, but it could have been so much better if it would have actually followed the story, instead of taking random parts of the book and putting them together in a random order and out of contextJaqo
Hayao Miyazaki never ceases to amaze me! His movies are so full of warmth, amazing imagination and adventure, that watching them is like being a PART of a fairytale, and not only watching it. He is truly one of the greatest storytellers of our time.TheMajor
There plot is pretty bad, but still a nice movie.bandofoutsider
Even with all of the odd plot contrivances that others have mentioned, it was so endearing that I find it hard not to love it.jktomas
I thought it's fantastic. The I watched other Miyazaki's films and now it's one of my least favorite of Miyazaki, but still very good.Though, it's hard to follow the story line at times and some actions of characters (Sophie destroying the castle or Witch of the Waste being bad then suddenly good) still make me scrach my head.
All in all, good movie, but a bit flawed. Sure it has great animation (it might even be the greatest animation that ever existed) but it doesn't help much sometimes. Afterall, I wouldn't mind if someone proved me wrong and said it's a perfect movie.

The book has a much better story, they've simplified and added big plot holes for the movie. But the movie has absolutely gorgeous animation and it's a lot of fun seeing the characters come to life. The movie is well worth watching for the animations alone.

I found this movie quite enjoyable! There are some flaws in plot, true, but it's still delightfully entertaining and very much a Miyzaki film. To speculate on @abcderach's question on Sophie's changing age, in the book Sophie's curse has to do with how she perceives herself. She perceives herself as an old woman, so she remains one, until she changes her perception. I think Miyzaki tried to touch on this theme, by making Sophie appear young again whenever she was in a youthful state of mind, but it wasn't very well communicated. For instance, her unexplained gray hair at the end I attributed to a symbol of maturity or wisdom.abcderach
you know what i never got..can howl see the young sophie? if not then why does it show her young again a few times then back to old?danisanna
Unique story that appeals to all generations within a family. It's witty, fantastical, funny and moving (quite literally too!).Dewsions
Everything combined in this film is amazingly stunning, the beautiful scenes with magic and the scenery really does make this a wonderful animated adventure. All in all, this is a must watch!vmunda
