The animation looks amazing in places, and completely wooden in others.. but outside of that I see the critical backlash as being overly reactionary (and maybe I enjoyed this movie more as a reaction to that..). There's a lot of fun and cute moments, and, in my opinion, it's an original take on the Ghibli "witch girl" movie.
I reccomend watching in Japanese, the dubbing was more distracting than in your typical 2d anime
As a movie fan and especially as a digital animation student, this was painful to watch. The lighting was bad throughout, giving everything a washed out quality and there were no bump maps or proper textures on most things. Everything aside from set dressing (which was really beautiful in places) felt like it was made of the same grey goo with the same reflectivity and weight. It was incredibly distracting as someone who deeply understands what they're doing wrong, but I imagine it is distracting to most viewers even if they can't quite put their finger on it.
Honestly, I can't even comment on the story because I was too angry and distracted. A swing and a miss for Goro on par with Earthsea and nowhere near as captivating, entertaining or engaging as Poppy Hill. Hayao's right not to trust him with the studio.

This was the worst Ghibli-movie I've ever seen, and I've seen most of them, if not all. It has none of the charm of the original ones.
