   ucuruju

   A bit too many "and then they all clapped moments" where injustice is presented just so a character can stand up to it or preach against it or suffer it with dignity. The film also feels a bit disjointed with flashbacks that serve little purpose and too many things going on. However-- this works quite well in the end. McQueen knows how to build tension and keep the viewers engaged even when he's resorting to what amounts to cheating by refusing to give a scene resolution just to keep us writhing in our seats. It also hits emotionally without feeling too cloying. Just a little bit cloying. All in all a good, solid, well made, classic, classy, very British War World II film that also questions those we're-all-in-it-together propaganda films of the 40s by bringing race into the mix. 1 month ago
