As a Dickinson fan, I very much wanted to like this, but I found the overly mannered style rather off-putting; the characters don't so much converse as proclaim dueling aphorisms to one another. That works on rare occasions in plays like Oscar Wilde's, but A Quiet Passion has a stilted solemnity that holds it back from real comedy. The effect is more like a series of talking dioramas than a traditional film, and it never won me over. 5 years 3 months ago

Really good acting cannot save the script marred by a solidly stiff script. It's like watching actors in still life paintings. Some of the dialog makes Jane Austen sound modern and vibrant.
It feels like they lifted direct quotes from letters between the characters. Even in those times and places, people didn't speak like they wrote. 1 year 11 months ago

The protagonist was played very well, but the style of filming made it lack something and without having beforehand knowledge on Emily some parts might be a bit confusing. 5 years 6 months ago
