Damn that gator looks so good! All the scenes of reptilian carnage are rad, the effects stellar. I like that there were maybe 15 minutes of people not believing the in our savior the gator, but the mystery is very quickly dispelled. Something often overlooked in creature features is balancing the monster scenes with logical and interesting character problem solving development. Alligator balances this well, and Robert Forster does a great job, putting this movie up there with Tremors or The Blob.
Well... there is indeed an alligator, so the title doesn't lie.
Jokes aside, the movie is actually very watchable. Bounces back and forth between an enjoyably gory B-Movie and an actually pretty well-made thriller with two solid lead performances. So despite some tonal whiplash, it's entertaining. Definitely among the better of the Jaws rip-offs.
A silly idea played straight, which in itself is amusing. Robert Forster plays the detective who has a score to settle with a car-sized alligator on a killing spree. There are some really cool scenes involving the monster in this movie, but we also have a lot of scenes not involving the monster. Those scenes are of little interest, they go on too long and are about characters we don't really care about.
