While I can see the points being made by @satisfythecrave, and one could point out the gimmick removes the audience from the story completely but I really enjoyed this film. There are plenty of movie references to give all the pretentious movie goers pats on the back in recognition for being oh so clever (Jaws, Matrix, Dark Knight...etc.)
Consistently reminding the audience that it was a true story by bringing it back to the real guys was a bold move. I, Tonya was told in a similar fashion but Margot and Sebastian played the interviewed versions as well. In a modern progression of filmmaking, this film pays off for the audience if you commit to the fun 5 years 9 months ago -

Have heard many mixed things, but i loved it. The mixed live action/documentary worked really well for me and made it much more involving than a random true crime bio or a stale netflix style adaptation. thumbs up. 5 years 8 months ago -

Either a documentary or narrative film would have served the story well, but making it a hybrid took it up a notch. The interview inserts kept it real and the changing of details from how different people remembered them added a light touch. Good use of humor.
I especially liked the epilogue, and how Audubon's Birds had a recurring role throughout the film. 5 years ago
