Jonathan - I'm not a fan of this movie either, but the "people only pretend to like [insert popular movie] to look cool" argument gets really old really fast. First, because most anyone you're accusing of having such a mindset would be able to name you plenty of really well-loved movies that they didn't like. Second, because it's arrogant and narcissistic to believe that because you hated a movie everyone else must secretly agree with you but they're too afraid to admit it. That's not a mature thought process.

A vast majority of those claiming to like the film actually do like it, because they enjoy it and because it connects with them.

With that said, it's clear that you're only pretending to dislike the film. You secretly love it but claim otherwise so that you can look cool to all your hipster contrarian friends.

At first I thought this film was pretentious and stupid, but by the end it completely won me over and now I love it. It's one of the only films I've ever seen which made me think about the way I live my life and how I should change it.

Why doesn't anyone just close the curtains in this movie?

Great movie. Loved the ideas behind it, that seem to be told in an off-handed way but in the end resurface again and make you think. All the pieces fall together, when one looks at the characters, although maybe, as someone said below, Spacey's wife comes across as your typical desperate wife. As a viewer you are not allowed to feel a lot of sympathy for her, at any point, spoiler. However, the rest of the cast makes up for that, amazingly, making this film a 20th century masterpiece.

Maybe I should watch it again, maybe I missed the beauty, but for now, I did not like the movie at all.

1999 was indeed a good year for filmmaking. This is pretty much the opposite of Fight Club. Fight Club explains why life is meaningless crap - American Beauty explains why life is so beautiful. Both brilliant films. Nothing else can be said about it - brilliant.

Amazing film, you can't expect almost anything that happens in the second part of it. The message about beauty is also great.

A brilliantly thought provoking film, definitely one of my ultimate favourites. It's fascinating, touching, unusual, compelling and charming, to say the least. Kevin Spacey is remarkable.

Did not enjoy this one. I know it's very popular and I'm sure there's some sort of irony or brilliancy to it but if that is so then I've missed it. Just not my movie.
